Zacchaeus Climbs the Sycamore: An Outcast Found by the Lord

On the road through Jericho toward Jerusalem, the streets were packed with people hoping to see Jesus. Among them stood one figure who was especially conspicuous and especially alone: Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich, having grown wealthy by collecting taxes for Rome and squeezing his own countrymen at every turn. In Jewish eyes he was a traitor, a sinner, a man unfit to sit at anyone's table. And yet this very man, scorned by the whole city, carried a longing he could scarcely explain even to himself: he wanted to see who Jesus really was.

A Rich Man Everyone Looked Down On

Zacchaeus had the wealth others envied, but he could not buy their respect. He sat behind his tax booth living comfortably, yet inside he was frighteningly empty. Money filled his coffers, but it could not fill his soul. Scripture deliberately notes that he was 'little of stature'; this is more than a comment on his height. In the crowd he was pushed to the very edge, unable to see and unable to press in, exactly like his place in that city: rich, yet marginalized; alive, yet cast off into the shadows.

A Longing That Climbed a Tree

Zacchaeus did something no rich man would ever do: he set aside his dignity and 'ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree.' A grown man of standing, climbing a tree in public, just for a distant look at Jesus. That shameless urgency was the overflow of a heart starving for something more. Those who seek Jesus often have to lay down their pride first. He thought he was merely a spectator watching from afar, never realizing that the very Lord he wanted to see was already searching for him.

'Today I Must Abide at Thy House'

Jesus came to the tree, looked up, and did something that shook the whole city: He called Zacchaeus by name. Out of that entire crowd, the Lord passed over all the respectable religious men and lifted His eyes instead to the despised tax collector up in the sycamore, and freely declared: today I must abide at thy house. He was not invited by Zacchaeus; Jesus chose him and came to him. Hidden in those words is the most moving secret of the gospel: it is not that we find God first, but that God stoops down to us first.

The Crowd's Murmuring and the Lord's Choice

Zacchaeus came down 'joyfully' and welcomed Jesus, but the people all murmured among themselves: He has gone to be a guest with a man that is a sinner. The very one whom others condemned and avoided was exactly the one Jesus meant to draw near and save. Jesus never compromises with sin, yet He is willing to sit at the table with sinners. He entered Zacchaeus's house not to approve of his past extortion, but to bring a complete turning under that cursed roof.

Repentance That Repays Fourfold

Anyone who truly meets the Lord will bear fruit in his life. Zacchaeus spoke no hollow religious words; he stood up and made real, public repentance: he gave half his goods to the poor, and to anyone he had cheated, he repaid four times over. He did not bargain; he gave back more than he took. Repentance is not merely feeling sorry in the heart; it is a reorientation of life. The hands that once grabbed for money were now opened wide to give and to make amends. When a person truly tastes grace, he gladly lets go of what he once clutched so tightly.

Salvation Comes to This House Today

Jesus watched it all and made His declaration: this day is salvation come to this house. He called Zacchaeus a 'son of Abraham', not by bloodline, but by the believing, repentant heart he now carried. Struck off the list by everyone else, Zacchaeus was gathered back by the Lord into the family of God. Salvation is not a prize handed to the perfect; it comes freely to the sinner who is willing to turn back.

The Son of Man Came to Seek and Save the Lost

The whole story finally rests on one word from Jesus that lights up everything. Zacchaeus thought he had climbed the sycamore to find Jesus, but in truth it was the Shepherd who had walked all the way into Jericho to recover this one lost sheep. You do not have to become good first to be worthy of the search; it is precisely because you are lost that the Lord comes for you.
