Tucked into John chapter 4 is one of the tenderest and most surprising encounters in all of Scripture. A Samaritan woman drawing water alone at noon, a weary Savior resting beside the well, an ordinary-looking conversation that would forever change the fate of one woman and an entire town. 1. Noon at the Well: A Woman Others Avoided
The Jews had long looked down on the Samaritans, and the two peoples had no dealings with one another. This woman, moreover, came out not in the cool of morning or evening when others gathered to draw water, but alone under the blazing sun of midday. What she was avoiding was not only the heat, but the stares and the whispers of the crowd.
And it was precisely in this forgotten hour, in this avoided corner, that Jesus deliberately sat by the well and waited for her. The passage says Jesus 「must needs go through Samaria」, and this was no geographical necessity, but the necessity of love. For the sake of one person He made an exception, walking into a place others refused to set foot.
2. A Savior Who Asks for Water: The Move of Humility
Jesus spoke first. He said, 「Give me to drink.」 How startling those words are: the Lord of glory asking a lowly woman for water, a Jewish rabbi seeking help from a Samaritan woman. She herself was astonished: 「How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria?」
The gospel so often begins when the Lord stoops low to us. Jesus did not stand above her in judgment; He lowered Himself and, through a simple need, knocked on the tightly shut door of her heart.
3. The Promise of Living Water: A Spring Welling Up Within
Then Jesus lifted the conversation from well water to the eternal. What He wanted to give her was not water that quenches thirst for an hour, but living water that satisfies a lifetime of thirst.
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.John 4:10 (KJV)
This woman had gone from one husband to the next, drawing again and again from people and from the world, only to find herself thirsty once more. Jesus saw straight through it all and pointed her to the true answer.
Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.John 4:14 (KJV)
4. A Past Brought to Light: Gentle Yet Honest
When the woman asked for this living water, Jesus said, 「Go, call thy husband, and come hither.」 With one sentence He touched her deepest wound. She had had five husbands, and the man she now lived with was not her husband. Jesus was not out to shame her, but to heal her; and without exposing the wound, there can be no real healing.
Remarkably, she did not turn and flee. For the first time she had met someone who saw right through her, and yet did not cast her away. To be truly seen and still be accepted, this is the very taste of grace.
5. I That Speak Am He: The Savior Revealed to Her
The woman tried to steer the conversation toward the dispute over worship, but Jesus drew her to the heart of the matter: true worship is not bound to this mountain or that temple, but is offered in spirit and in truth. When she mentioned the Messiah (the Christ) who was to come, Jesus made one of the most precious self-declarations in all the Gospels.

The Messiah whom everyone awaited revealed Himself so plainly for the first time, and He did it before a Samaritan woman with a broken past. The order in which grace arrives so often defies our expectations.
6. Leaving the Water Jar: Bringing a Whole Town to the Lord
In that moment she did something deeply meaningful: she left her water jar by the well and ran back into the town. She had come for water, but now she had found a spring far more precious than water, and the jar no longer mattered.
She said to the people, 「Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?」 A woman once avoided became the first person in the whole town to proclaim the good news. Many of the Samaritans believed in Jesus because of her word, and believed all the more when they heard for themselves: this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
7. Grace Moves Through Every Wall
In this story, Jesus crosses one barrier after another: the wall of race, the wall of gender, the wall of reputation, the wall of religion. No wall can halt the Lord's steps as He seeks out a single soul. However unworthy, however broken, however forgotten you may feel, the Lord who sits waiting by the well is waiting for you too.
