Canaan lay right before them, the good land God had promised to give. Israel had already come out of Egypt, crossed the Red Sea, and received the Law; only one step remained before they entered their rest. Yet in Numbers 13 and 14 we witness a heartbreaking turn: a moment of faith buried by the fear of ten men. This is not merely an ancient story; it is the very choice every person walking the road of faith must face.
Twelve spies sent into Canaan
At the LORD's command, Moses chose one man from each of the twelve tribes of Israel, twelve leaders in all, to spy out the land of Canaan that God had promised. They were to see whether the land was rich or poor, whether its people were strong or weak, whether its cities were open camps or fortified strongholds. This should have been a journey brimming with hope, for the land they went to scout was the inheritance God had already sworn to give them.
The land truly flowed with milk and honey
Forty days later, the spies returned. They brought back a single cluster of grapes so large it had to be carried on a pole between two men, along with pomegranates and figs. The land was indeed just as God had said, flowing with milk and honey. Not one word of God's promise had failed; the richness of the land stood before them all, evidence they could see, touch, and taste.

Ten spies brought back an evil report of fear
But then came the turn: the ten spies said, 「Nevertheless.」 When they saw the great fortified cities and the giant sons of Anak, their hearts melted with terror. They were not reporting facts; they were spreading fear. They made themselves small and the giants large, even spreading the rumor that the land was one that 「devoured its inhabitants.」

Caleb and Joshua said, 「We are well able to overcome」
In the midst of the people's panic, Caleb quieted them and spoke the words that ring through the whole history of faith. He and Joshua saw the same giants and the same fortified cities; the difference was that they still saw God. They did not underestimate the enemy; they simply held the Lord who promised the land in higher regard. The fearful reckon only how strong the enemy is; the faithful remember how great God is.

Israel's unbelief bought forty years of wandering
Tragically, the whole congregation believed the evil report and wept all night, saying it would have been better to die in Egypt, and plotting to appoint a new leader and return there. They would rather go back to the land of slavery than press forward in faith. The punishment God decreed matched their own grumbling words: for every day the spies had scouted Canaan, they would wander a year in the wilderness, a day for a year, forty years in all, until that faithless generation fell dead.
What kept them from entering the promise was never the giants of Canaan, but the unbelief in their own hearts. God's arm had not grown short; what had shrunk was their faith to look to Him.
The choice between faith and fear stands before us too
The same Canaan, the same giants, gave rise to two utterly different responses. Fear makes people retreat, complain, even long to turn back; faith makes people say, 「We are well able to overcome,」 because the assurance of victory rests not in ourselves but in the God who keeps His word. Fear looks at the circumstances; faith looks at the Lord. The hardships, sicknesses, trials, and obstacles you and I face today may well be our own Canaan. What God asks is not how tall the giants are, but whether we trust Him.
May you choose faith, and not let the promise fall
Only Caleb and Joshua, the two men who wholly followed God, finally entered that good land. May we too be those who follow the Lord with a whole heart, never missing His grace by hiding in fear.
