Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath: Faith in the Last Handful of Meal

The seventeenth chapter of 1 Kings records a story set in a year of famine. Because of the sins of King Ahab, Israel suffered more than three years of drought, and the land was gripped by hunger. In the midst of such desperate circumstances, God chose a foreign widow, and through her last handful of meal He revealed how He watches over those who trust in Him.

Sent Out in the Famine

God commanded the prophet Elijah to leave his hiding place by the brook Cherith and go to Zarephath in Sidon. It was not a place of plenty, nor the homeland of Elijah's own people, but a foreign city. God said, 'I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.' God's provision is often hidden in the very places that seem least likely to us.

How could a widow, barely able to keep herself alive, sustain a prophet? To human eyes it appeared hopeless, yet God's command never fails. He would display the riches of His grace in the place of deepest want.

Down to a Single Handful of Meal

When Elijah reached the city gate, sure enough he met a widow gathering sticks. He asked her for a little water and a morsel of bread. Her answer laid bare her plight: she had only a handful of meal in the barrel and a little oil in the jar, and she was gathering two sticks to go home and prepare a final meal for herself and her son, that they might eat it and then die.

What a real and utter dead end this was. She faced not a choice between generosity and stinginess, but the very edge of life and death. And yet the word of God came to her precisely at this moment, when every earthly resource had run dry.

Make Me a Little Cake First

Elijah's words sound almost unreasonable: 'Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.' God asked her to offer up the little she had first, and to put herself second.

This was the testing of faith. God was not indifferent to whether she lived or died; rather, He was teaching her that only by placing her limited resources into His hands could she experience His limitless supply.

For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.1 Kings 17:14 (KJV)

The Barrel of Meal Shall Not Waste

The widow chose to believe. She did as Elijah said and made the little cake for the man of God first. And then the wonder unfolded — that handful of meal was never used up, and that little oil never ran dry. God's promise was fulfilled before her eyes, day after day.

And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.1 Kings 17:16 (KJV)

Provision Enough for Each Day

God did not give her a storehouse full of grain all at once; instead, He made it enough for every single day. She, her son, and Elijah ate of that unfailing meal for many days. The supply was neither too much nor too little — exactly enough for one day.

This is just as the Lord Jesus taught His disciples to pray: 'Give us this day our daily bread.' God wants His children to look to Him and depend on Him every single day, coming to know their faithful God through His provision renewed morning by morning.

The Miracle of Resurrection

Later the widow's son fell ill, until no breath was left in him. The mother's heart was nearly shattered; she even feared that her own sin had brought this calamity upon her. Elijah took the child, carried him up to the loft, and stretched himself upon the boy three times, praying earnestly that God would let the child's soul return to him.

God heard the prophet's cry, and the child's soul came into him again, and he revived. God provides not only the bread of this life; He is also the Lord who holds power over life and death.

And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.1 Kings 17:24 (KJV)

Placing the Little We Have into God's Hands

The story of the widow of Zarephath is a mirror held up to us. We too often cling tightly to the last handful of meal in our hands when we face want, anxiety, and a future we cannot see. Yet God invites us to hand it over to Him first, and in the obedience of faith to experience the grace that never wastes and never fails.
