The Wise Men Follow the Star: Worship with Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, most people were fast asleep. Only a handful of wise men from a far country lifted their eyes and saw a strange star in the heavens. They were not Israelites, yet they became the first in Scripture to fall down and worship the holy child. This story, recorded in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, is about seeking, worship, and obedience to God in the midst of power and intrigue. It reminds us that though this King was born in a lowly manger, He is worthy to be worshiped by people who come from the ends of the earth.

The Wise Men Saw His Star

These wise men came from the East, most likely scholars skilled in studying the stars and reading the heavens. When a star they had never seen before rose in the sky, they did not treat it as an ordinary event but recognized it as the sign of a King's birth. And so they were willing to leave their familiar homeland and set out on a long, unknown road.

Jerusalem Is Troubled

When the wise men entered Jerusalem and began asking everyone where the King could be found, the news blew through the palace like a cold wind. When Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. News that should have brought joy became a threat in the hearts of those who clung to power. The same star that moved some to rise up and worship stirred others only to destroy.

Scripture Points to Bethlehem

Herod gathered the chief priests and the scribes and demanded to know where the Christ should be born. They opened the writings of the prophets, and the answer was clear beyond doubt: not in the splendid capital, but in little Bethlehem. God's promise had long been written in Scripture, waiting only for people willing to seek it in humility.

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.Matthew 2:6 (KJV)

The Star Went Before Them

When the wise men had taken their leave of Herod and gone on their way, the star they had seen before suddenly went ahead of them again, leading them until it stood still over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. God makes the way plain to those who seek Him with all their heart, and the assurance of being led became the deepest joy at their journey's end.

They Fall Down and Offer Their Treasures

When they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary His mother, the wise men did not first speak of their achievements or ask for favors; instead, they fell down and worshiped the child. They opened their treasures and offered, one by one, the precious gifts they had carried with them: gold, honoring Him as King; frankincense, worshiping Him as God; and myrrh, foreshadowing His death and burial for the world. True worship always gives its best to the Lord with a willing heart.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.Matthew 2:11 (KJV)

They Return by Another Way

After they had worshiped, the wise men were warned by God in a dream not to go back to Herod. And so they obeyed, and departed into their own country another way. Those who have met the true King find their steps turning in a new direction; they are no longer ruled by earthly power but listen to the voice of God and walk a different road.

Blessed Are Those Who Find Him

The journey of the wise men is a picture of every seeker: they saw the sign and rose up; they met opposition and pressed on; they found the holy child and fell down to offer everything. This King still welcomes everyone who is willing to come today. No matter where you come from or how many wrong turns you have taken, if you will lift up your eyes and worship in humility, you can find the Savior who was born for you and gave His life for you.
