Esther: Who Knows Whether You Have Come to the Kingdom for Such a Time as This?

In all of Scripture there is one book in which the word “God” never appears from beginning to end: the book of Esther. And yet it is precisely in this book — which reads on the surface like a tale of palace intrigue — that we see the hidden hand of God quietly upholding His people. An orphaned Jewish girl who has lost her parents is placed deep within the Persian court, and in the hour of her people's destruction she becomes the instrument of their rescue. This is a story about “such a time as this” and about the courage to lay down one's life.

An Orphan in a Land of Exile

Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah, was one of the Jews carried away captive to Persia. Both her parents had died, and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai. She was a stranger in a foreign land, an orphan with no one to lean on — and yet she was “fair and beautiful,” was chosen into the palace, and in the end received the crown of queen. God so often begins His work with the lowliest and least noticed of people, taking the hopeless and filling them with hope.

A Hidden Identity in the Palace

Mordecai charged Esther not to reveal that she was a Jew, and so she kept it hidden. On the surface this looks like nothing more than caution within the court; in truth it was the very groundwork God had laid. Esther came to the throne not by her own scheming, but by God's step-by-step arranging in secret. What looks to us like chance is, in God's sight, destiny.

Haman's Plot to Destroy a People

Haman the prime minister nursed a bitter hatred because Mordecai would not bow before him, and he devised a wicked plan: to wipe out every Jew in the Persian Empire in a single day. He cast lots to fix the day, bought the king's decree with a great sum of silver, and the edict of slaughter went out to every province. Darkness seemed to have the upper hand; Mordecai and all the Jews put on sackcloth and ashes and wept and wailed. Yet in that deepest despair, God's plan of redemption had already been set in motion.

“Who Knows Whether You Have Come for Such a Time as This”

Mordecai sent word to Esther with the heart-shaking words. He reminded her: your place in the palace is no accident — it is what God has prepared for “this time.”

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?Esther 4:14 (KJV)

These words were spoken not only to Esther but to every believer. God has placed you in your present position, your family, your calling, all for His good purpose — that you might be used by Him in the opportunity of “such a time as this.”

“If I Perish, I Perish”

By the law of Persia, anyone who came before the king uninvited was to be put to death. For Esther to go before the king was to stake her very life. Yet after fasting and prayer, she made the decision to lay herself down.

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.Esther 4:16 (KJV)

“If I perish, I perish” — this is the faith that places itself wholly into God's hands. True courage is not the absence of fear, but obedience in the very midst of fear. Esther did not rely on her beauty or her rank; she fasted and prayed first, entrusting the outcome to the God who rules over all things.

The Hidden Hand, the Turning of the Tide

Again and again God's hand shows itself in the details: that very night the king could not sleep and ordered the chronicles read aloud, and there — just so — was the old record of how Mordecai had saved his life; the gallows Haman had built for Mordecai became in the end his own place of execution; the very Jews he plotted to destroy received the king's decree to defend themselves and win the day. The pit the wicked man dug, he fell into himself. The Jews' sorrow was turned to joy, their mourning into gladness, and from then on they kept the Feast of Purim to remember this great deliverance for all generations.

Though God's Name Is Never Named, His Hand Never Departs

The book of Esther teaches us one precious lesson: even when you cannot feel God or see God, God is still on the throne. In the days when you sense only His silence, He has not fallen asleep and He has not gone away; through one “coincidence” after another He is accomplishing His redemptive purpose. The place where you stand today may be exactly what God has prepared for “such a time as this.”
