Peter and Cornelius: The Door of the Gospel Opens to the Gentiles

In Acts chapter ten, a seemingly ordinary meeting became a turning point in the history of the church. On one side stood Peter, a Jewish apostle; on the other, Cornelius, a Roman officer. Two men once separated by culture, religion, and prejudice were each called by the same God in the very same moment. This was no coincidence, but the moment when God Himself threw open the door of salvation to the Gentiles. From then on, the gospel would no longer belong to a single people, but would be proclaimed to every nation under heaven.

A God-Fearing Gentile

Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in Caesarea. Though a Gentile by birth, he feared God, gave generously to the poor, and prayed continually. He was uncircumcised and not of Israel, yet his heart had truly turned to the one true God. One afternoon, an angel of God appeared to him in a vision and told him to send men to Joppa to bring back Simon, who was called Peter.

What God values has never been outward status or lineage, but a heart that fears Him and longs for Him. Cornelius' prayers and his gifts to the poor were remembered before God.

The Vision on the Rooftop

At the same time, on a rooftop in Joppa, Peter was praying when he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened, and a great sheet let down by its four corners to the earth, filled with all kinds of beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air, all of them unclean and forbidden to eat under Jewish law. A voice said to him, 'Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.' But Peter refused, saying he had never eaten anything common or unclean.

And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.Acts 10:15 (KJV)

What God Has Cleansed Is Not Common

The voice spoke this three times, and then the sheet was taken back up into heaven. While Peter still wondered what it meant, the men sent by Cornelius were already standing at the gate. The Spirit told Peter plainly: doubt nothing, and go with them. Only then did he understand, that the vision was not merely about food, but about people. The ones God wanted to cleanse were the Gentiles, whom the Jews had long regarded as 'common.'

What God tore down was the wall of self-righteousness in the human heart. He wanted Peter to see that before grace, no one is unworthy by birth.

Peter Crosses the Threshold

Peter entered Cornelius' house, where a room full of Gentiles waited for him. He openly admitted that a Jew was not supposed to associate with a Gentile, but that God had shown him he should call no one common or unclean. So he began to speak, telling of the good news that came through Jesus of Nazareth.

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.Acts 10:34-35 (KJV)

The Spirit Poured Out on All Who Heard

While Peter was still speaking of how Jesus was crucified, raised, and grants forgiveness of sins, something unexpected happened, the Holy Spirit, waiting for no ritual and no circumcision, fell directly upon these Gentile listeners. The Jewish believers who had come with Peter were amazed, for the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles as well.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.Acts 10:44 (KJV)

This was God's own seal. By His action He declared that the Gentiles, too, had received the promised Holy Spirit, no different from the Jewish believers.

A Door Opened to All Nations

When Peter saw this, he said: since these have received the Holy Spirit just as we have, who can forbid water that they should be baptized? So he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. The door that had once shut the Gentiles out was now thrown wide open forever. The gospel would have no more walls; salvation would go from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, reaching everyone willing to believe.

This Door Is Open for You, Too

The story of Cornelius tells us that the grace of God has no boundaries. Whatever your background, your past, or your standing, if you come before Him with a heart that fears and longs for Him, the door of salvation stands open for you. What God has cleansed, no one can call common again; whom God has accepted, no one can shut out.
