Cain and Abel: The World's First Tragedy Born of Envy

The first story after humanity leaves the Garden of Eden is not about cities or wars, but about two brothers and an act of worship. Cain and Abel were the first two children born to Adam and Eve. Both came before God to present an offering, yet the same act revealed two very different hearts. This account in the fourth chapter of Genesis is only a handful of verses long, and yet it lays bare how envy devours the human heart step by step, while also showing us the mercy God still holds even in judgment.

Two Brothers, Two Offerings

Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain was a tiller of the ground. When the time came to bring an offering, Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground, while Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their fat. Scripture tells us that the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering He did not look with favor. What God valued was not, first of all, the kind of offering itself, but the heart of the one who offered it.

What God Accepts Is Faith

Why was Abel accepted? The New Testament gives us the answer. Abel came before God not by means of a more costly sacrifice, but by a heart that trusted in God. He offered the firstborn, the very best, because he truly put God first.

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.Hebrews 11:4 (KJV)

Sin Crouching at the Door

When Cain saw that he was not accepted, he was very angry, and his countenance fell. Yet God did not immediately condemn him. Instead, He tenderly offered him a warning and an appeal, giving him a chance to turn back. God let him see that the problem was not that God played favorites, but whether he himself was willing to do what was right.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.Genesis 4:7 (KJV)

Envy Grows into Murder

Sadly, Cain did not rule over the sin crouching at the door; instead, the sin ruled over him. He took out on his innocent brother the anger he felt, luring Abel out into the field, where he rose up and killed him. The first murder in the world happened between blood brothers, and its cause was nothing but envy. When we indulge the resentment and bitterness within us, it becomes like a wild beast, dragging us to places we never meant to go.

Where Is Your Brother

God sought out Cain again and asked him, Where is Abel your brother? This was a chance for him to confess, yet he answered coldly, brushing it aside.

I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?Genesis 4:9 (KJV)

But blood cannot be hidden. God said, the voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. God is the God who watches over the wronged; no matter how deeply a crime is buried, He hears the silent cry of the victim.

Mercy Within Justice

God passed judgment on Cain, driving him from the familiar ground and making him a restless wanderer. This was justice, for sin must have its consequences. Yet even in God's judgment there was mercy: when Cain feared that others would kill him, God set a mark upon him to protect his life. God hates sin, and yet He is unwilling for the sinner to perish; this is the very heart that runs through the whole of Scripture.

Choosing the Path of Faith

The story of Cain and Abel sets two roads before each of us: one is the road of envy, comparison, and resentment, which leads a person into darkness; the other is the road of trust, obedience, and humble worship, which brings a person into God's favor. Though Abel is dead, his faith still speaks to us, inviting us to offer our best to God and to entrust our hearts fully to Him.
