While the people of Israel groaned in slavery and wept day after day in Egypt, God had not forgotten His covenant. He sent Moses to stand before Pharaoh and speak the words that shook heaven and earth: “Let my people go.” But Pharaoh refused. So God sent upon Egypt ten escalating plagues—from the plague of blood to the death of the firstborn. These plagues were not random calamities, but the judgment of the living and true God against a hardened empire, and His mighty act to rescue His people and make His name known. Let us meditate on them together.

1. God Heard the Cry of the Enslaved

The ten plagues begin with the mercy of God. Israel groaned beneath the brick kilns and the lash, as if no one cared. Yet Scripture tells us that God had been listening all along.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.Exodus 2:24 (KJV)

The first thing the ten plagues reveal is not the wrath of God, but His faithful love. He remembered His covenant; He looked upon those who suffered. Behind the judgment stands a God who will not abandon His people.

2. The Ten Plagues Were a Judgment on the Gods

Egypt was the mightiest empire of its day, worshiping countless idols: the Nile was revered as a god, and frogs, the sun, and cattle each had their corresponding deities. Nearly every plague God sent struck directly at one of the idols the Egyptians trusted—the Nile turned to blood, the sun swallowed by darkness, the livestock ravaged by pestilence.

God Himself made His purpose clear: “Against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.” The ten plagues were therefore an open contest, declaring that the LORD is the one true God in heaven and on earth, and that all creation lies beneath His feet. The idols in which people trust cannot stand for a moment before Him.

3. Ten Escalating Judgments

Blood, frogs, lice, flies, pestilence on the livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and at last the death of the firstborn—the plagues deepened step by step. At first Egypt's magicians could feebly imitate them, but before long even they bowed and confessed, “This is the finger of God.” Time and again, God gave Pharaoh the chance to repent and turn back.

This reminds us that God's judgment is often gradual, and always carries a summons. Every warning is a hand of mercy extended, waiting for us to turn. God takes no pleasure in the destruction of anyone, but desires that all should come to repentance.

4. Pharaoh's Hardened Heart

When the plagues fell, Pharaoh confessed his sin more than once; but the moment each plague passed, he changed his mind and hardened his heart. Scripture says both that Pharaoh hardened his own heart, and that God gave him over and hardened Pharaoh's heart.

And Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither would he let them go; as the LORD had said.Exodus 8:15 (KJV)

Pharaoh's story is a mirror. If a person keeps refusing the voice of God, the heart grows harder and harder, until it can no longer hear at all. Today is the day to turn back; harden not your heart. May God grant us a soft and listening heart.

5. The Passover Lamb: Salvation in the Midst of Judgment

The tenth plague—the death of the firstborn—was the most terrible of all. Yet on that darkest of nights, God had prepared a way of rescue: every household was to slay a lamb without blemish and paint its blood on the doorposts.

And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.Exodus 12:13 (KJV)

When the destroyer saw the blood on the door, he passed over that house. This is the origin of the Passover. Salvation does not rest on our worthiness, but on the blood of the lamb. That lamb was a foreshadowing of the Savior who would one day lay down His life for us—Jesus Christ.

6. The Gospel Hope the Ten Plagues Point To

Sheltered by the blood of the lamb, the people of Israel were kept safe, and at last walked out of the land of slavery toward freedom. This picture runs through the whole of Scripture: what God values is not whether we are good enough, but whether we are hidden beneath the salvation He has prepared.

The New Testament calls Jesus “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” His precious blood, like the blood on the doorposts, causes judgment to pass over everyone who trusts in Him. The ten plagues ended in freedom; the gospel, too, ends in freedom—freedom from the bondage of sin, into the glory of the children of God.

7. Do You Hear His Call Today?

The story of the ten plagues asks us again and again the same question: will you harden yourself to the end like Pharaoh, or will you humbly take refuge in God like the Israelites covered by the blood? The God who heard the cry and worked salvation still says to you today: “Return to me.”
