Daniel in the Lions' Den: Praying Three Times a Day and God's Deliverance

Here was a man at the very center of power in a foreign land, envied by his colleagues and driven to a dead end by the king's own edict, yet he never once stopped bowing his knees to God. His name was Daniel. In the sixth chapter of the book of Daniel we see a vivid spiritual picture: when faithfulness and faith come at a cost, God does not remain silent. Faithfulness in the Land of Exile

Daniel was carried off to Babylon as a young man, and he lived through several dynasties. By the time Darius the Mede came to the throne, he was an aged official with silver hair. The king set a hundred and twenty princes over the whole kingdom, and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one. Because an excellent spirit was in him, surpassing everyone else, the king thought to set him over the entire realm. That an exile should be lifted to such a position in a foreign country was itself the grace of God.

Even more remarkable was his blameless character. The colleagues who envied him searched for something to accuse him of, combing through everything he did in governing the kingdom, yet they could find no fault, because he was faithful in his duties, without error or negligence.

Unable to Find Fault, They Attacked His Faith

His enemies finally reached a conclusion: the only way to bring Daniel down was through his faith. "We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God." Those words were actually the highest praise of Daniel, for his life and his faith were one and the same. His enemies could not breach him anywhere else, so they had to exploit his loyalty to God.

So they hatched a scheme, persuading King Darius to sign a decree: for thirty days no one could make a petition to any god or man except the king, and whoever did would be cast into the den of lions. Flattered by their words, the king signed the writing, which could not be changed.

The Windows Still Opened Toward Jerusalem

When Daniel learned that the decree had been sealed with the royal signet, what did he do? Scripture's account is quiet and powerful.

Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.Daniel 6:10 (KJV)

"As he did aforetime" — those words are the heart of the whole story. Daniel did not shut his windows, nor did he pray in secret. He was not deliberately provoking anyone; he simply refused to change a lifetime of loyalty to God out of fear of men. True faith is often revealed precisely in these choices to carry on "as before."

Cast into the Lions' Den

His enemies were waiting for this very moment. They seized on Daniel's praying as their occasion and pressed the reluctant king to carry out the decree. King Darius labored all day to save him, and until sunset he could find no way, because the writing could not be altered. In the end, Daniel was thrown into the den of lions.

As they parted, the king spoke a word full of meaning: "Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee." Then a stone was laid over the mouth of the den. That night the king returned to his palace, fasting, and could not sleep.

God Shut the Mouths of the Lions

At the first light of dawn the king rose in haste and came to the den, crying out in anguish. And Daniel answered.

My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.Daniel 6:22 (KJV)

It was not that the lions were not hungry, but that God had sent His angel to shut their mouths. Daniel was lifted out of the den without a single wound, because he had trusted in his God. God's deliverance so often comes to those who stay faithful even when no one is watching.

King Darius Praises the Living God

This deliverance shook the entire empire. King Darius did not claim the credit for himself; instead he sent word to all peoples, nations, and languages, that they should tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

For he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.Daniel 6:26-27 (KJV)

A pagan king, moved by one man's faithfulness, proclaimed to his whole kingdom the glory of the one true God. God used the integrity of a single man to accomplish a testimony far beyond anything he could have asked or imagined.

Daniel's story is not meant to make us expect that we will be rescued from the "den" every single time; rather, it invites us to be like him, keeping a heart open toward God no matter the circumstances.
