The Transfiguration: A Glimpse of Glory Before the Cross

On the road that led to the cross, the Lord Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, heaven was suddenly opened, and the disciples saw with their own eyes that this Teacher who walked, ate, and slept beside them was in truth the Son of God, come from heaven and full of glory. This scene, called the Transfiguration, is recorded in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9, and it is the tenderest ray of light before the cross.

He Led His Disciples Quietly Up a High Mountain

The Lord Jesus deliberately chose three disciples, drew away from the crowd, and led them quietly up a high mountain. The unveiling of His glory was not loud, nor did it come amid bustling crowds; it came in the stillness of withdrawing to be alone with the Lord. Luke tells us that Jesus went up the mountain in order to pray, and while He was praying, the glory of heaven filled Him. If we long to see the Lord today, we too must learn to withdraw to a hidden place and grow still before Him.

His Face Shone Like the Sun, His Clothing Dazzling White

Right before the disciples, the Lord's appearance was suddenly changed. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white and radiant, whiter than any launderer on earth could bleach them. This glory was not draped over Him from without; it shone out from within Him, for He is in truth the Lord of glory, ordinarily veiled in flesh. What the disciples saw in that moment was His true identity: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God.'

Moses and Elijah Appeared, Speaking of His Departure

Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared to them and spoke with Jesus. Moses represents the Law, and Elijah the Prophets, and their appearing declares that the whole of the Old Testament points to this one Christ. Luke makes it clearer still: what they spoke of was the 'departure' that Jesus was about to accomplish at Jerusalem — that is, the cross He was to walk toward. The glory on the mountain was not meant to bypass the Passion, but to prepare the way for it.

Peter's Words Were Not Yet Finished

When Peter saw this glorious sight, he was so overcome that he blurted out, 'Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' He said this not knowing what he was saying. People always want to hold on to a moment of glory and to set the Lord alongside His servants, failing to grasp that the Lord Jesus is utterly unique, exalted above all. The beauty of grace lies not in what we do for the Lord, but in quietly beholding Him.

This Is My Beloved Son; Hear Him

While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and out of the cloud came a voice. This was the Father Himself speaking, bearing witness to His beloved Son. The Father did not direct the disciples to look to Moses, nor to Elijah, but pointed to Jesus alone: This is my beloved Son; hear him. The Law and the Prophets must give way, and Christ's word alone is what we are to bow down and obey all our lives.

They Saw Jesus Alone

When the disciples heard the voice, they were terrified and fell on their faces. Jesus came and touched them, saying, 'Arise, and be not afraid.' When they lifted up their eyes, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw Jesus alone. This is the truest picture of faith: when every vision fades, when the fear in our hearts is touched by the Lord's hand, all that remains is Jesus, real and living, who never leaves us and never forsakes us.

Down the Mountain, Toward the Cross

The glorious mountaintop was not the destination. The Lord Jesus led His disciples back down and stepped once more into the weakness, sickness, and need of the crowd, moving at last toward the cross at Golgotha. He let the disciples glimpse the glory first so that their faith might be sustained in the dark days to come. This reminds us today as well: whether on the mountain or below it, in triumph or in loss, the Lord whose face shone like the sun is always with us, and He will surely lead us through the cross into the glory of the resurrection.
