Hannah's Prayer: Giving Back to God What We Treasure Most

After she prayed, the sorrow lifted from Hannah's face. She had not yet seen the promise fulfilled, and yet her heart had already found peace, because she had laid her burden down before God. In time, God remembered her; she conceived and bore a son, and she named him Samuel, meaning 『I have asked him of the LORD』.

Giving Samuel Back to God

After the child was weaned, Hannah did a hard thing: she took the boy, together with an offering, back to Shiloh and placed Samuel before the priest. The child she had asked for with tears now became a gift given to God. She said that the LORD had granted her petition, and so she would lend him to the LORD as long as he lived. True prayer, in the end, always points to willing surrender.

My Heart Rejoiceth in the Lord

Then Hannah sang a song. In it there is no boasting, only reverence for God and trust in Him. She praised not her own son, but the Lord who brings low and lifts up, who makes poor and makes rich.

Prayer and Surrender

Hannah's story teaches us that prayer is not only asking God to change our circumstances; it is letting God change our hearts as we wait. She poured out her sorrow and offered back what she treasured most, and so she received a blessing greater than a son: the peace and joy of resting before God.
