Exodus 14 records one of the most breathtaking scenes in the Old Testament. The Israelites had only just left the land of their slavery when they found themselves pinned between Pharaoh's army and the vast expanse of the Red Sea. The sea blocked the way ahead; the pursuing soldiers pressed in from behind. There seemed to be no possible escape. And yet it was in that very moment of hopelessness that God revealed His salvation to them, and to believers of every generation since: when we have run out of roads, God still has a way.
Trapped Between the Army and the Sea
No sooner had Pharaoh released the Israelites than he regretted losing his slaves, and he set out after them with his finest troops and chariots. When the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians bearing down on them, they were terrified and cried out against Moses, even saying it would have been better to remain slaves in Egypt than to die in the wilderness. Fear made them forget the mighty power God had just displayed through the ten plagues in Egypt. When people are cornered, nothing is easier than to be swallowed by the threat in front of them and to forget how faithful God has been all along the way.
Do Not Be Afraid; Stand Still
Facing a panicking people, Moses neither exaggerated the danger nor pretended everything was fine. Instead, he turned their eyes back to God. His words have become a declaration of faith echoing down through the ages:
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.Exodus 14:13-14 (KJV)
"Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord" is not a call to give up and passively await death. It is a call to stop leaning on our own struggling and fear, and to trust instead in the God who fights for us. The first step of faith is often simply to grow quiet and hand our burdens over to Him.
Lift Up Your Hand, and Move Forward
After they had quieted their hearts and looked to Him, God then commanded the people to "go forward." Faith is not standing frozen in place; it is stepping out on the word of God. He told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea, and He set the pillar of cloud and fire between the two camps, so that the Egyptians could not come near the Israelites all night long. In God's work there is both silent waiting and obedient action, and the two are never at odds.
Across the Red Sea on Dry Ground
That night, God worked with mighty power:
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.Exodus 14:21-22 (KJV)
The sea that had once blocked their path now became the very road to their rescue. The obstacle that had driven them to despair became, in God's hands, the stage on which His glory was displayed. The way God saves us often goes far beyond anything we could ask or imagine.
The Pursuers Perish; The People Are Fully Saved
The Egyptians, trusting in their chariots, chased them into the sea, but God made their chariot wheels come off so that they drove with difficulty. At daybreak Moses stretched out his hand over the sea once more, the waters closed again, and Pharaoh's entire army was drowned; not one of them remained. But the Israelites saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. The power that had terrified them and pursued them their whole lives collapsed completely in a single night. God did not rescue them halfway; His salvation was total and complete.
The Song of a Redeemed People
Having witnessed such a wondrous deliverance, the Israelites stopped their complaining and lifted their voices in song. This is the first great hymn in the Bible, the Song of Moses:
I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation.Exodus 15:1-2 (KJV)
Worship is the most natural response of a people who have been saved. When we look back on all that God has done in our lives, fear turns into thanksgiving, and complaint turns into praise.
At Your Own Red Sea Today
Perhaps you too are standing at the edge of your own "Red Sea": illness, debt, a broken relationship, a situation with no visible way out. The story of the Red Sea reminds us that when God lets us reach the end of ourselves, it is not to abandon us, but to let us see with our own eyes the deliverance that He alone can bring. Simply stand still, be quiet, look to Him, and step forward on His word, for the God who parted the Red Sea still reigns today.
