Pentecost: The Day the Church Was Born

After Jesus was taken up into heaven, the disciples did not scatter in fear. Instead, obeying their Lord's command, they stayed in Jerusalem, praying constantly with one accord, waiting for the Spirit the Father had promised. When the day of Pentecost came, an event that would shake the ages quietly descended upon this group of ordinary people, and the church was born in the fire of the Holy Spirit.

Gathered Together, Waiting for the Promise

Pentecost was originally the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest, and crowds from every region streamed into the holy city. Yet in an upper room within the city, about a hundred and twenty disciples were gathered together in one place. They did not go their separate ways, nor did they lose heart at their Lord's departure. With one mind and one hope, they quietly kept the words Jesus had spoken before He ascended: do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

This waiting with one accord was the very soil in which the Spirit would work. What God sets out to accomplish often begins with a group of people who are willing to obey and united with one another.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.Acts 2:1-2 (KJV)

The Signs of Wind and Fire

The sound was like a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house. Then tongues as of fire appeared, separating and resting on each one of them. Both wind and fire are signs of God's presence throughout Scripture: the wind stands for the Holy Spirit, unseen yet truly at work, and the fire symbolizes purifying, illumination, and a burning love.

God did not reveal Himself to them through lofty arguments, but in a way they could see with their own eyes and experience for themselves, so that every one of them would know for certain: the promised Holy Spirit had truly come at last.

Filled with the Spirit, Speaking Other Tongues

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and as the Spirit gave them utterance, they began to speak in other tongues. This was not confusion but a marvelous grace: at the very first proclamation of the gospel, God was already prepared to cross the towering walls of language and reach all peoples.

Those who had come from every nation under heaven, speaking many different dialects, were astonished, for each of them heard the disciples declaring the mighty works of God in his own language. The tower of Babel had once scattered human speech, but at Pentecost the Spirit made the gospel understood across every tongue. God's desire is that people of every tribe and nation might hear of salvation.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.Acts 2:4 (KJV)

Peter Stands Up to Preach Christ

Peter, who had once denied his Lord three times and fallen in weakness, now stood up and lifted his voice to preach to the crowd. The same Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, was like a different man. Quoting the prophet Joel and King David, he testified that this Jesus, who had been crucified and raised from the dead, was the very one God had made both Lord and Christ.

The Spirit brings not only signs but the boldness to proclaim the gospel. Peter's message was simple and powerful: turn from sin in repentance and return to the risen Savior.

Three Thousand Baptized into the Lord

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brothers, what shall we do? Peter answered, Repent, every one of you, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. That day, those who received his word, about three thousand of them, were baptized and joined the community of believers.

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.Acts 2:41 (KJV)

The Birth and Continuation of the Church

The three thousand who were baptized did not simply gather for the excitement and then disperse. Scripture tells us they continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. This was the earliest church: God's children, joined together by the Spirit, centered on Christ, loving and caring for one another.

The fire kindled at Pentecost has burned all the way from Jerusalem to this very day, across two thousand years, reaching the place where you and I stand. The same Holy Spirit who filled the disciples is still seeking and filling all who are willing to turn to the Lord today.
