The Jordan had only just parted, and Israel had stepped into the Promised Land. The very first city standing before them was Jericho, strong and fortified—its gates shut fast, no one going out or coming in. To human eyes it was an insurmountable wall; but through this very city God meant to teach His people a lesson: true victory does not depend on the number of your weapons, but on simple faith and obedience. Joshua chapter 6 records this strange and glorious battle.
A City God Had Already Given
Before the fighting ever began, God spoke to Joshua. He did not say, "Go and conquer it," but rather, "I have already given this city into your hand." The outcome was settled in God's hands from the start; all that remained was whether Israel would do as He said.

A Battle Plan That Made No Sense
The strategy God gave made no military sense at all: not to storm the city, not to raise ladders, but to march around it. For six days straight, the army of Israel circled the city once a day, the priests carrying the ark and blowing their trumpets, while the people kept silent and made no sound. On the seventh day, they were to circle the city seven times.
A command like this tested not their strength, but their faith and obedience. People are quick to solve their troubles by their own methods, yet God so often asks us first to be still, and to walk out His word one step at a time.
The Shout on the Seventh Day
On the seventh day, when the priests blew the long blast, Joshua commanded the people: Shout, for the LORD has given you the city! And the whole camp let out a thunderous shout, and that seemingly immovable wall collapsed in an instant.
So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.Joshua 6:20 (KJV)
The Wall Fell Because Faith Stood First
Looking back on this event, the New Testament book of Hebrews names the one thing that mattered—the walls of Jericho fell because of "faith." Through the long wait of those seven days of marching, there was nothing to show for it; the wall stood as firm as ever. What truly brought it down was not the shout of the seventh day, but the trust that, for six days, they had refused to abandon.

Rahab: Salvation Tied to a Scarlet Cord
Amid the ruin of the whole city, one household found mercy. Rahab the harlot had risked her life to shelter Israel's spies, binding her own life and the lives of her whole family to a single scarlet cord hung from her window. Joshua ordered his men, according to their earlier oath, to bring her and all her father's house out safely, and from then on she dwelt among Israel.
Rahab's origins and her past were nothing to be proud of, yet the grace of God reached her. She would later even be written into the family line of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). This reminds us: whatever a person's past may be, whoever will turn to God in faith shall never be put to shame.
The Jericho of Today
In our own lives there may well be one "Jericho" after another—a weakness that seems impossible to overcome, a trouble that leaves us gasping for breath, a prayer that goes so long without an answer. The lesson God gives us is often the same: not to storm the walls by our own methods, but to march faithfully around them as He has said, and to leave the outcome in His hands.
The steps of obedience may feel monotonous, and the days of waiting may feel long, but the God who once brought down the walls of Jericho is faithful still today. What He has promised will never fail.
