Mention Thomas, and the first thing most people think of is 「Doubting Thomas.」 Those two words seem to stick to him like a label that can never be washed off. Yet if we read John's Gospel carefully, we discover that Thomas is far richer than that label suggests. He was an honest, deeply devoted, and earnest disciple, a man who refused to pretend he understood and refused to say one thing while thinking another. And it was precisely this kind of man who, in the end, spoke the highest confession of faith in the entire Gospel.
Thomas, Also Called Didymus
The name 「Thomas」 means 「twin」 in Aramaic, and the Greek rendering, 「Didymus,」 means the same thing. Scripture never tells us who his brother or sister was, yet it seems to hint at something: within Thomas there was a kind of tension, two things living side by side. Faith and doubt, courage and weakness, often dwelt in him at the same time. This is a true portrait of many real believers.
The Courage to Go and Die Together
Lazarus had fallen ill, but Jesus wanted to return to the danger of Judea, where the people were ready to stone Him. While the other disciples hesitated, Thomas was the first to speak up, filled with a readiness to die.
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, 'Let us also go, that we may die with him.'John 11:16 (KJV)
This was not doubt but willing, self-sacrificing loyalty. Thomas may not have fully understood what his Lord was about to do, yet he had already decided: whether death or life lay ahead, he would follow the Lord to the very end. To truly know Thomas, we cannot overlook this depth of devoted commitment.
「How Can We Know the Way?」
At the Last Supper, Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for His disciples, and that they knew the way where He was going. Thomas honestly admitted that he did not understand, and voiced the confusion in his heart out loud.
Thomas saith unto him, 'Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?'John 14:5 (KJV)
It was because Thomas was willing to ask that we received Jesus' precious answer: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' Very often, God does not despise our questions. On the contrary, through our honest asking He reveals deeper truth to us.
The Struggle of a Man Who Would Not Believe Lightly
On the day Jesus rose, Thomas happened to be absent. The other disciples excitedly told him, 「We have seen the Lord,」 but Thomas could not believe on the strength of someone else's word. He needed to see with his own eyes and touch with his own hands before he would believe.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, 'We have seen the Lord.' But he said unto them, 'Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.'John 20:25 (KJV)
It is easy for us to blame Thomas, but his struggle was in fact very real. He had just lost the Lord he loved; his heart was already broken, and he simply did not dare to hand over his hope so easily again, for fear of being wounded a second time. His doubt was not proud resistance but the caution of a wounded man.
「My Lord and My God!」
Eight days later, the disciples were again gathered together, and this time Thomas was with them. Though the doors were shut, Jesus stood in their midst, turned to Thomas, and said, 「Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.」 The Lord did not rebuke him. Instead, with compassion, He met the deepest need of Thomas' heart exactly where it was.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, 'My Lord and my God.'John 20:28 (KJV)
This is the summit of the entire Gospel of John. The man who once said 「I will not believe」 now fell down before the risen Lord and made the fullest confession of faith: Jesus is not only Lord but also God. Honest doubt did not push Thomas away from Christ; instead, in a personal encounter with his Lord, it was transformed into genuine worship.
A Promise for Today's Doubters
Jesus went on to say: 'Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.' These words are spoken especially to us. Unlike Thomas, we have not seen the risen Lord with our own eyes, yet we can believe through the testimony the apostles left behind. Thomas' doubt was recorded precisely to strengthen our faith.
