Among the many figures in the Bible, Joshua is often overlooked, standing as he does in the towering shadow of Moses. Yet it was this quietly serving, faithfully following servant who at last led Israel across the Jordan and set foot in the good land of Canaan that God had promised. Joshua's life is a lesson in faithfulness, courage, and obedience, and it holds out an invitation to us today: Will you serve the LORD all your days?

Moses' Faithful Assistant

Joshua was originally named Hoshea, the son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim. Soon after Israel came out of Egypt, he appears at Moses' side. In the battle against the Amalekites, Joshua led the troops fighting in the valley below while Moses lifted up his hands in prayer on the hill (Exodus 17). He was not a leader in the spotlight, but one content to learn and serve behind the scenes.

Scripture specially records that when Moses went up Mount Sinai to meet with God, Joshua went along as his minister; and even at the tabernacle, "his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, departed not out of the tabernacle." Those years of being trained in the presence of God laid the foundation for the weighty task he would one day carry. The true leader is often first a faithful servant.

Two Faithful Men Among Twelve Spies

When Israel reached the border of Canaan, Moses sent twelve spies to search out the land. When they returned, ten of them, terrified by the sight of the land's towering inhabitants, spread a bad report and shook the confidence of the whole congregation. Only Joshua and Caleb held fast to their faith in God's promise.

But Caleb, and Joshua the son of Nun, who wholly followed the LORD my God, they shall see the land... the land which I promised to give them for a possession.Numbers 14:24, 31 (KJV)

Because of that faithless generation, Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years, and only Joshua and Caleb survived to enter the Promised Land. Faith that will not follow the crowd, and faithfulness that God surely remembers—this is a vivid mark upon Joshua's life.

"Be Strong and of a Good Courage"

After Moses died, the heavy responsibility of leading the people fell upon Joshua's shoulders. What a daunting charge! Yet God Himself strengthened his heart, saying the same thing to him three times over:

Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

The strength God promised did not rest on Joshua's own bravado, but was built on the foundation that "the LORD thy God is with thee." At the same time God commanded him to meditate on the words of the book of the law day and night and to do them. True courage comes from trusting and obeying the word of God.

Leading Israel Across the Jordan

God was about to bring this new generation into Canaan, and the first obstacle was the overflowing Jordan River. God commanded the priests carrying the ark to step into the water first; the moment their feet touched it, the waters upstream stopped and rose up in a heap, and the whole congregation crossed over on dry ground (Joshua 3–4).

This scene echoes the crossing of the Red Sea years before, declaring to the new generation: the God who was with Moses is now with Joshua. God often calls us to step out in faith first, and only then does His work become plain.

The Fall of Jericho

Once in Canaan, the first fortified city was Jericho. God's method was unexpected: not a strategy for storming the walls, but a command that the people march around the city—once a day for six days, and seven times on the seventh day—while the priests blew the trumpets and the people shouted. And so the walls came tumbling down.

The victory at Jericho reminds us that the outcome of the battle rests with the LORD. What we are to offer is simple faith and obedience, not our own scheming. Whoever acts according to God's word will see the glory of God.

Inheriting the Land God Promised

After this, Joshua led Israel in campaigns north and south, taking possession of all Canaan step by step and dividing the land among the tribes, fulfilling the oath God had sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Scripture sums it up: not one word of all the good things the LORD had promised failed; every one came to pass.

All that Joshua experienced throughout his life is a testimony to the faithfulness of God. What He has spoken He will surely accomplish; of all that He promises, not one thing falls to the ground.

"Me and My House, We Will Serve the LORD"

In his old age, Joshua gathered the people at Shechem and issued them a final challenge: to serve the LORD wholeheartedly and to put away every idol. And he set forth his own unshakable resolve:

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15 (KJV)

These words have reached across the millennia and still stir countless families today. Serving God is not a momentary feeling, but a lifelong choice—and more than that, a calling to lead one's whole household back to God. May this become the resolve of your heart and mine as well.
