In the citadel of Susa, in the Persian Empire, there lived an exiled Jew named Mordecai. He held no impressive rank; at first he was simply an ordinary man who sat at the king's gate. Yet through His hidden and wonderful providence, God used him to bring about a story that would rescue an entire people. Mordecai's life is a testimony of faithfulness, integrity, and courage.
A Foster Father in Exile
Mordecai was a descendant of the tribe of Benjamin, carried away from Jerusalem among the exiles to Persia. When his cousin Hadassah (that is, Esther) lost both her father and mother, Mordecai took her as his own daughter and brought her up. Adrift in a foreign land, he never abandoned family ties or duty, but shouldered the burden of raising an orphaned girl.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother.Esther 2:7 (KJV)
Refusing to Bow Before Haman
When Haman the Agagite was promoted, and the king commanded everyone to kneel before him, Mordecai would not bend the knee. It was not out of pride, but out of the fear of God and faithfulness to his faith. While the crowd drifted along with the current, he would rather bear hostility than violate his conscience by falling at the feet of a man. This uncompromising integrity is the very touchstone of faith.
Uncovering the Plot Against the King
As Mordecai sat at the king's gate, he happened to overhear two of the doorkeepers plotting to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. He did not conceal it, nor did he hold back to see what would happen; instead he reported the news at once, and saved the king's life. This good deed was recorded in the chronicles at the time, yet seemed to go unnoticed by anyone. But God never forgets the faithfulness of His servants.
Grieving for His People, Stirring Esther to Act
When Haman's scheme to destroy the Jews was published, Mordecai tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and cried out bitterly in the city. He sent word to stir Esther into action, speaking those unforgettable words that bound her position as queen to the purpose of God.
And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?Esther 4:14 (KJV)
God's Hidden Providence
On the very night Haman had prepared the gallows to hang Mordecai, the king could not sleep, and ordered the book of records to be read. It fell open to the account of how Mordecai had exposed the plot. So it was Haman who ended up being sent to lead the royal horse and proclaim honor through the streets for the man he hated. Though God's providence was hidden, it guided every step, so that the wicked man's schemes fell upon his own head. The whole book of Esther never mentions God's name directly, yet His hand is plainly at work in every 「coincidence.」
Lifted Up, and His People Delivered
The outcome was reversed: Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had built, while Mordecai was granted honor by the king and rose to power, second only to the king himself. The Jews were able to defend themselves and escape the threat of destruction, and the feast of Purim was established from this, remembered for generations as a deliverance. Though Mordecai rose to high position, he never stopped striving for the good of his people and seeking the peace of all his brethren.
For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.Esther 10:3 (KJV)
A Reminder for Us
Mordecai teaches us that even when no one is applauding, and even when danger draws near, we must hold fast to integrity and fear God more than we fear people. God watches over every quiet act of faithfulness, and He governs the timing in places we cannot see. May we too carry this kind of courage, and remain faithful in the place where we have been set.
