Daniel: A Captive in a Foreign Land, Faithful to the End

Among the many figures of the Old Testament, Daniel's life is especially moving. Taken from his homeland as a youth, he spent the rest of his days in the court of a hostile empire; yet through every shift of power and every threat to his life, he never wavered in his faithfulness to God. His is not the legend of a saint, but the hope of everyone who lives far from home and out of control of their own fate: God was in Babylon, and He is in the very place where you and I stand today.

A Young Man Carried Off to a Foreign Land

Daniel was a young nobleman of Judah. Around 605 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon captured Jerusalem and carried him and several companions away to Babylon. He was given a new name, educated in a foreign court, and taught the learning of the Chaldeans—everything pressing him to forget his God and blend into this new world.

Yet though Daniel lost his freedom and was taken far from the temple, the God within his heart was not lost. God's children may be hemmed in by their circumstances, but their circumstances can never tear out the root of their faith.

Refusing the King's Food, Resolved to Stay Pure

Newly arrived at the palace, Daniel was set before the king's rich food and fine wine. It looked like favor, but it was bound up with idolatry and unclean things. Scripture records his choice:

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank.Daniel 1:8 (KJV)

He did not protest loudly; gently but firmly, he asked only for vegetables to eat and water to drink. Ten days later, he and his companions looked healthier and better nourished than those who ate the king's food. Faithfulness often begins with the smallest choices, the ones no one sees.

The Wisdom to Interpret the King's Dream

Nebuchadnezzar had a strange and terrifying dream, yet he refused to tell anyone what it was. He commanded his wise men both to recount the dream and to interpret it, on pain of death. All the wise men were helpless, but Daniel cried out to God and received the revelation in a vision of the night.

Standing before the king, he freely confessed: this secret was not owed to any wisdom of his own; rather, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He gave all the glory to God, and for the first time the mighty king of Babylon bowed low and praised the true and living God.

The Writing on the Wall

Many years later, Belshazzar, a descendant of Nebuchadnezzar, threw a great feast and even drank from the gold and silver vessels plundered from the temple, praising his idols. Suddenly a hand appeared, writing on the palace wall, and the whole hall was seized with terror. The aged Daniel was summoned, and he read out the mysterious words:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.Daniel 5:25 (KJV)

Without fear he declared to the king: God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting. God is the Lord of history, and every proud throne will at last be weighed before Him. That very night Belshazzar was slain, and Babylon fell.

Faithfulness in the Lions' Den

By the time of King Darius, the aged Daniel was raised to high office for his excellence and character, stirring the jealousy of his colleagues. They schemed to establish a decree: for thirty days no one might pray to any god or man except the king, on penalty of being thrown into the lions' den. Daniel knew the decree had been signed—

Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.Daniel 6:10 (KJV)

He did not hide, and he did not compromise; he simply worshiped as he always had. He was thrown into the lions' den, but God shut the lions' mouths. By dawn he was completely unharmed—while it was the king who could not sleep all night. The cost of faithfulness may be heavy, but the God who watches over us never slumbers.

The Vision of an Eternal Kingdom

Daniel not only interpreted the dreams of others; God also gave him visions concerning the last days. He saw the nations rise and fall like beasts, and he saw one "like the Son of man" coming with the clouds of heaven, receiving dominion, glory, and a kingdom:

That kingdom is an everlasting kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and all peoples will serve Him. As the empires of earth crumbled one after another, Daniel's eyes were drawn by God toward that unshakable kingdom—the very promise that the Lord Jesus Christ would one day fulfill.

What Faithfulness in a Foreign Land Teaches Us

Daniel's life spanned seventy years and several dynasties of kings. He never once sat on a throne, yet he always stood on God's side. He shows us this: faith is not a decoration for the easy times, but knees that still bend in the midst of hardship. You and I may also be living in our own "Babylon"—an unfamiliar city, a grueling workplace, a crowd that does not understand us. But the God who was with Daniel is still with us today.
