After the story of Abraham, the Bible turns its focus to his son Isaac, and to the woman who would share his whole life with him: Rebekah. She first appears at a well, water jar in hand, eagerly drawing water for a stranger's servant and his camels. Who could have guessed that this ordinary act would become God's answer for Isaac? Rebekah's life is woven through with God's wonderful guidance, simple faith, and the very real weakness and grace of a family.
A Servant's Prayer
Abraham was old, and he did not want Isaac to marry a woman of Canaan, so he sent his faithful old servant back to his own people and homeland to find a wife for Isaac. This was not a journey built on certainty, but a journey of faith.
The servant came to the outskirts of the city of Nahor, made his camels kneel by the well, and then offered God a specific and humble prayer: let the young woman of whom he asked for water, who would not only give him a drink but also volunteer to draw water for his camels, be the one God had appointed to be Isaac's wife. He placed the choice entirely in God's hands.
The Girl Drawing Water at the Well
Before he had finished speaking, Rebekah came out with her water jar. She was beautiful, and when the servant ran up and asked her for a little water, she not only agreed at once but also offered to draw water for the camels until they had drunk their fill. Keep in mind that a single camel can drink a great deal of water, and she was facing ten of them.
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.Genesis 24:18-19 (KJV)
This was no deliberate performance, but the natural overflow of a heart that was diligent, generous, and glad to serve. What God values is often exactly this kind of character, shown when no one is watching. The servant looked on in silence, and he understood in his heart: God had already answered his prayer.
Leaving Her Father's House by Faith
The servant explained why he had come, and Rebekah's family too could see that this was from the LORD. When they asked Rebekah whether she was willing to set out at once, she gave a clear and courageous answer.
And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.Genesis 24:58 (KJV)
Behind those few simple words lay enormous faith. She would leave her parents and her familiar homeland to marry a man she had never met. Just as Abraham had once been called to leave his own country and kindred, faith often means being willing to take an unknown step toward God's promise. And God's providence is often accomplished through people who submit as willingly as this.
Isaac Is Comforted
When Rebekah arrived in Canaan, she happened to meet Isaac as he was meditating in the field. At their first meeting, Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent and took her as his wife. The Bible records the beginning of this marriage with a tender line.
Scripture says that Isaac took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death (Genesis 24:67). God not only provided a wife for Isaac but, through this beautiful union, also soothed his grief over losing his mother. This reminds us how detailed and tender God's care truly is.
The Twins Esau and Jacob
Yet for many years Rebekah was unable to bear children. Isaac prayed to the LORD on her behalf, God answered his prayer, and Rebekah conceived twins. The two children struggled against each other within her, so she went to inquire of the LORD, and God revealed to her a startling prophecy.
And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.Genesis 25:23 (KJV)
Esau was born first, and Jacob followed, gripping his brother's heel. God's choice does not follow the human order of older and younger, but follows His own good pleasure. Yet in this family, favoritism was quietly sowing a crack: Isaac loved Esau, while Rebekah favored Jacob.
Weakness in the Blessing, and God's Providence
Isaac had grown old and his eyes were dim, and he planned to give the firstborn's blessing to Esau. When Rebekah heard this, she devised a scheme for Jacob to impersonate Esau and steal the blessing that should have gone to the older son. Perhaps her motive held some memory of God's prophecy, but her method was deception; and while Jacob gained the blessing, he was also forced to flee, and mother and son never saw each other again in this life.
This is one of the honest sides of the Bible: it never whitewashes human weakness. Rebekah had faith and courage, but she also had partiality and calculation. Yet the wonder is this: God did not abandon His plan because of human trickery; instead, on top of human failures, He still fulfilled the promise He had made at the first. God's providence is greater than our failures; His grace can take a crooked path and, in the end, lead it to the good that He has appointed.
