In Acts 16, Paul and his companions crossed the sea into Europe. The first city they set foot in was Philippi, and the first person in that city to turn to Christ was not a dignitary or a synagogue leader, but a woman praying by a river who made her living selling purple cloth: Lydia. Her story is brief, yet like a quiet seed it bears witness to how God Himself opens a person's heart, and to how an open heart becomes an open home.
1. Worship by the River: A Seeker of God
When Paul and his group reached Philippi, on the Sabbath they went outside the city gate to the riverside, for that was where people gathered to pray. Philippi seems to have had no formal synagogue, only a small group of God-fearing women quietly seeking Him beside the flowing water. Lydia was among them.
She was one who 「worshipped God」 already. She did not yet know Christ, yet she was sincerely seeking. God never despises a heart so prepared. He often comes to meet us in the very places where we worship quietly and wait patiently.
2. A Merchant of Purple Cloth
The text specifically notes that Lydia was 「a seller of purple」 from the city of Thyatira. Purple dye was extremely costly in that day, a color only royalty and the wealthy could afford, and those in the trade were generally people of means and standing. Lydia was very likely an independent businesswoman of considerable resources.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.Acts 16:14 (KJV)
Wealth and status did not keep her from coming to God; instead, once she turned to the Lord, they became vessels for service. What God values has never been how much a person holds, but whether that hand is willing to open for Him.
3. The Lord Opened Her Heart
The most moving line in this account is that 「the Lord opened her heart.」 Lydia knew business, understood figures, and had seen much of life, but what truly made her listen and believe was not Paul's eloquence. It was the Lord Himself at work, opening the door of her heart.
The starting point of faith is that God gives grace first. The Lord opens a person's heart before that person can truly hear the gospel and receive the truth. Lydia's conversion reminds us that salvation is by grace, and even the heart that is willing to believe is a gift from God.
4. She and Her Household Were Baptized
Once her heart was opened, action followed. Lydia did not linger in the emotion of the moment; she responded at once, bringing her whole household to be baptized into the Lord. Her faith was no private secret but a public commitment.
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.Acts 16:15 (KJV)
When one person truly turns to the Lord, it often blesses the entire household around them. Lydia's home became the first fruit of the gospel taking root in Europe.
5. An Open Home: Cradle of the Church
After her baptism, the first thing Lydia did was open the doors of her home, 「constraining」 Paul and his companions to stay. That word 「constrained」 is deeply earnest; this was no polite gesture but a fervent invitation that would hardly take no for an answer.
Later, when Paul and Silas had been thrown into prison, endured an earthquake, seen the jailer's whole household come to the Lord, and then been released, the first place they went was still Lydia's house (Acts 16:40). Her home became the earliest meeting place of the Philippian church, a spiritual house built with hospitality and love.
6. An Open Heart, an Open Door
Lydia's life gives us a beautiful picture: God opened her heart first, and she promptly opened her home. A person shown grace by God naturally becomes a channel of grace. She preached no sermons and worked no miracles, yet through the most tangible hospitality and diligence she upheld a newborn church.
God is still looking for such people today, people who may not stand on a platform but are willing to open their hearts to Him and their homes to brothers and sisters. Philippi went on to become one of Paul's most beloved churches, and that joy-filled letter, Philippians, may well have begun with the heart the Lord opened by the riverside in Lydia.
7. For Us Today
Lydia reminds us that true faith begins with a heart willing to be opened by God, and bears fruit in a life willing to be thrown open for Him. You and I may be ordinary, but as long as we are willing to open ourselves to the Lord, God can accomplish His great work through our homes, our tables, and our small acts of hospitality.
