Hannah: The Mother Who Prayed in the Temple

At the very opening of 1 Samuel we meet a woman soaked in tears, Hannah. She held no lofty position and did nothing the world would call spectacular. Scripture remembers her for one reason: she knew how to pray in the midst of pain. Her life teaches us that what truly changes our destiny is not the circumstances we can control, but the God who hears prayer.

A Heart Crushed by Sorrow

Hannah was the beloved wife of Elkanah, yet for years she remained childless. In an age when children were seen as blessing, this was a crushing weight. What made it harder still was that Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah, would constantly taunt and provoke her, year after year, until she wept and would not eat. Even her husband's tender words could not fill the emptiness in her heart. Her ache is one that many know well, that unspeakable loneliness with nowhere to turn.

Pouring Out Her Heart Before the Lord

Hannah did not unload her bitterness onto others, nor did she let it consume her. She rose and went to the temple at Shiloh, and prayed silently before the Lord, her lips moving but her voice unheard, weeping in deep anguish. The priest Eli even mistook her for a drunken woman. Her reply has become a model of prayer in all of Scripture.

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.1 Samuel 1:15 (KJV)

To 'pour out her soul', that phrase captures the very heart of prayer, emptying an entire broken heart before God, holding nothing back. What God desires is not elegant words, but an honest heart that surrenders all.

Making a Willing Vow

In her prayer Hannah made a vow: if the Lord would give her a son, she would give the child to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor would come upon his head. This was no bargaining transaction, but a mother who understood deeply that whatever comes from God ought to be given back to God. Her prayer was not only 'give to me', but the willing 'I offer up'. Such faith reached beyond her own need.

God Heard, and Gave Samuel

After she prayed, Hannah's face was no longer downcast, for she had laid her burden upon God. And God did remember her, granting her a son. Hannah named him Samuel, meaning 'because I have asked him of the LORD'. Every time that name was spoken, it was a testimony to God's faithfulness. Samuel would grow to become one of Israel's greatest prophets, and it all began with a mother's tears and prayers in the temple.

Giving the Child Back to God

Once the boy was weaned, Hannah did not go back on her word. She brought Samuel back to Shiloh and, with her own hands, gave back to God the very child she had waited so many years for and loved so deeply.

For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD.1 Samuel 1:27-28 (KJV)

What a hard and beautiful step this was. True faith lies not in clinging to God's gift, but in willingly handing that gift back to God. Hannah understood that Samuel had never belonged to her; he belonged to the Lord who gives life.

Responding to God's Faithfulness with Praise

What is astonishing is that in the very moment she gave up her beloved son, what flowed from Hannah's mouth was not a sigh but a song of praise brimming with power.

My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.1 Samuel 2:1 (KJV)

She sang of a God who lifts up the lowly and fills the hungry, declaring that the Lord alone is holy, the Rock on whom we can rely. This song would later become a forerunner of Mary's Magnificat. Hannah moved from tears to singing precisely because her eyes stayed fixed on the faithful God.
