Among all the figures in Scripture, few lives are as turbulent, or as tender, as Joseph's. He fell from being his father's favorite into a pit, was sold into slavery, and was thrown into prison on a false charge, only to rise at last to the highest place in Egypt, second to none but Pharaoh. This is not a rags-to-riches legend. It is a testimony of how God quietly works in the midst of suffering. Joseph's story is told in Genesis 37 through 50, taking up almost a third of the whole book.

The Coat and the Dreams: Loved, and Resented

Joseph was born to Jacob in his old age, and his father loved him deeply, giving him a coat of many colors. That coat became a glaring mark in his brothers' eyes. What angered them even more were Joseph's two dreams, in which their sheaves bowed down to his, and the sun, moon, and stars bowed to him as well. Young Joseph may not yet have learned to hold his tongue, but those dreams did not spring from his pride. They were a promise God had planted at the very beginning of his life.

Betrayed by His Brothers: Cast Into Life's Deep Pit

Once envy takes root, it bears terrible fruit. The brothers first wanted to kill him, then threw him into a pit, and finally sold him for twenty pieces of silver to a caravan bound for Egypt. They stained his coat with the blood of a goat and deceived their father into believing a wild beast had torn him to pieces. A boy of seventeen was pushed into darkness by the very people closest to him. Yet Scripture reminds us again and again of one thing: the LORD was with Joseph.

Potiphar's House and the Prison: Faithful, Yet Framed

In Egypt, Joseph was sold into the house of Potiphar, the captain of the guard. He served so faithfully that his master put everything into his hands. But when his master's wife tried to seduce him into sin, Joseph chose to leave his garment behind and flee rather than sin against God. He said, "How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" For that, he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. Doing what is right does not always bring an immediate reward, but even there, God was with him.

The LORD was with Joseph in the prison, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.Genesis 39:23 (KJV)

Freed by Interpreting Dreams: God's Appointed Time Had Come

In prison, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker, yet two full years passed before he was remembered on account of Pharaoh's own dream. Standing before Pharaoh, he said plainly, "It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace." He explained the seven years of plenty and the seven years of famine, and offered the wisdom of storing up grain. Pharaoh saw that the Spirit of God was in him, and set him over all the land of Egypt. The boy who had been sold as a slave, now thirty years old, was clothed in fine linen.

Reunion in the Famine: Tears and Testing

When the years of famine came, people from every direction came down to Egypt to buy grain, and Joseph's brothers came as well, never recognizing that the governor before them was the very brother they had sold. Joseph tested their hearts more than once, to see whether they had truly changed. When Judah offered to become a slave in the place of his brother Benjamin, Joseph could hold back no longer. He wept aloud and revealed to them who he was. Years of bitterness and pain melted, in that moment, into an embrace.

"God Meant It Unto Good": The Summit of Forgiveness

Many people spend their whole lives waiting for an apology. Joseph chose instead to offer forgiveness first. Facing his frightened, trembling brothers, he spoke what may be the most moving words in all of Genesis. He did not deny that evil was real, yet he saw the hand that ruled over that evil from behind.

But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.Genesis 50:20 (KJV)

Joseph understood that had he not been sold into Egypt, no one would have survived the famine. God did not keep him from the pit, but through that very pit He brought about deliverance. This is a foreshadowing of the cross: what people meant as the deepest wound became the greatest blessing in God's hands.

What Joseph Gives Us Today

Joseph's life tells us this: the injustice, the waiting, and the tears before your eyes are all seen by God, and He is weaving them together. He never wastes a single season of suffering. When you feel yourself pushed into a deep pit by others, remember that the God who was with Joseph is also with you.
