In the long shadow of Saul's reign stands a figure often overlooked yet shining with rare brightness—Jonathan. He was the king's firstborn, the natural heir to the throne, and yet he chose to hand his own glory to another. His faith was bold, his friendship deep, his loyalty unwavering to the point of death. In 1 Samuel 14 through 20 we see a heart that was willing to step back so another could rise.
Winning by Faith Against the Odds
When the vast Philistine army bore down and all Israel shrank back in fear, Jonathan did not wait. Taking only a young armour-bearer with him, he climbed the crags and struck the enemy camp. His faith did not count the numbers on either side; it counted only on whether the LORD would act.
And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.1 Samuel 14:6 (KJV)
A Soul Knit to David
After David struck down Goliath, Jonathan met him for the first time and was drawn to him at once. This was no passing rush of camaraderie but two God-fearing hearts recognizing one another. Scripture says Jonathan's soul was knit to David's, and that he loved David as his own soul—one of the noblest descriptions of friendship in all the Bible, and the wellspring of every act of self-denial that would follow.
The Covenant of the Stripped Robe
Jonathan made a covenant with David, then stripped off his own robe, his garments, his sword, his bow, and his belt, and gave them all to David. The robe was the mark of a prince; to remove it was to hand over his very rank and his future together. From its very beginning this friendship bore the sign of self-giving, foreshadowing the choices Jonathan would make for David again and again.
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.1 Samuel 18:3-4 (KJV)
Risking His Life to Protect a Friend
Saul grew jealous of David and more than once set his heart on killing him, even hurling a spear at his own son. Caught between his father and his dearest friend, Jonathan chose again and again to stand on the side of truth and justice. He pleaded for David before his father and, at the risk of his own life, warned him of danger—ready to offend his royal father rather than break his covenant.
Willing to Take the Lower Place
Jonathan knew clearly in his heart that the one God had anointed to be king was David, not himself. For most people this would be almost impossible to accept, yet he openly acknowledged God's choice and gladly surrendered the throne that was rightfully his. This spirit of refusing to grasp, refusing to envy, submitting to God's will is his most precious quality.
And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.1 Samuel 23:17 (KJV)
A Farewell of Faithfulness to the End
At their last meeting in the field the two wept together and renewed the oath they had sworn in the name of the LORD. Jonathan knew the road ahead was perilous, yet he blessed David with peace. He entrusted their friendship to the everlasting God, so that this covenant might reach beyond the generations, beyond life and death. Later he fell in battle alongside his father, and David lamented him, calling his love 'wonderful, passing the love of women.'
A Model of Self-Giving Love
Jonathan's whole life was a life of self-giving for the sake of another. He laid down his own rights so that God's purpose might be fulfilled; he stayed faithful in friendship, even to the very man who would take his place. He shows us that real love is not grasping but letting go, and that true greatness lies not in ascending a throne but in gladly stepping back for God and for others. In this he points us to the Lord Jesus, who gave Himself for us and handed His glory over to us.
