Andrew: The Disciple Who Brought People to Jesus

Among the twelve apostles, Andrew rarely stands at center stage. He never preached a sermon that brought three thousand to repentance the way Peter did, and he left behind no epistles. Yet nearly every time Scripture mentions him, we see the same picture: he is bringing someone to Jesus. That seemingly ordinary act became the most beautiful mark of his whole life.

He was the first to follow Jesus

Andrew had originally been a disciple of John the Baptist. When John pointed to Jesus and said, 'Behold the Lamb of God,' Andrew immediately left his teacher and followed this man from Nazareth. That day he stayed with Jesus, and from then on his life was completely turned around. He sought first, he listened first, and he was the first to make the decision to follow. On the road of faith, someone always has to be willing to take the very first step, and Andrew was that kind of person.

He first brought his own brother Peter

After meeting Jesus, the first thing Andrew did was not to plan a career, but to go and find his brother Simon. He brought Peter to Jesus, and this same Peter would one day become a pillar of the church. The man Andrew brought became more famous than Andrew himself, yet he was content to remain in the background.

He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias... And he brought him to Jesus.John 1:41-42 (KJV)

He brought the boy with the loaves and fish

Five thousand people were hungry, and the disciples were helpless. It was Andrew who noticed an unremarkable boy in the crowd, holding five barley loaves and two fish. Though he wondered, 'but what are they among so many?', he still brought that small offering into Jesus' hands. In the end, the whole crowd ate their fill, and twelve baskets were left over.

Andrew reminds us: offer up what seems far too little, place it in the Lord's hands, and it becomes enough. He did not have to work the miracle himself; he only had to bring the person and all he had.

He brought the seeking Greeks to the Lord

At the Passover, some Greeks longed to see Jesus. They first approached Philip, and Philip went to tell Andrew. So Andrew, together with Philip, brought these Gentile seekers to Jesus. Whether it was his own brother, a lowly boy, or foreigners from far away, in Andrew's eyes every one of them was worth bringing to Christ.

Quiet service is precious too

Andrew never grabbed the spotlight or sought to be seen. What he did was simple: one by one, he brought people to Jesus. This kind of service earns no applause, yet it beats closest to the heart of the gospel. Throughout church history, countless souls have been saved not starting from a pulpit, but from a single invitation: 'Come and see.'

His whole life was like an unnoticed little path, never the destination itself, yet leading people steadily to the true fountain of living water. To be willing to stay hidden and to lift others up is the deepest humility. When Peter stood before the crowds preaching, Andrew may well have been behind the scenes, praying for him and preparing the way for the next soul.

What he leaves for us today

Perhaps you feel you have no gifts, that you are not good with words, that your influence is small. Andrew tells you: you do not have to become Peter; you only need to be willing to be the one who brings Peter. Right beside you there may be a 'brother,' a 'boy,' or a friend who is searching, waiting for someone to bring them to the Lord.
