Josiah: The Boy King Who Took the Throne at Eight and Found the Book of the Law

In the dark closing years of Judah's kings, God raised up a remarkable ruler. He was no battle-hardened veteran, but an eight-year-old child. His grandfather Manasseh had plunged the nation into the depths of idolatry and bloodshed, yet in that ruined kingdom this boy grew into a king who turned to the LORD with all his heart. His name was Josiah, the young king who found the Book of the Law in the temple and wept over the word of God.

An Eight-Year-Old Child on the Throne

Josiah's reign began almost by force of circumstance. His father Amon had ruled only two years before his own servants killed him, and so the people made the young Josiah king in his place. Scripture does not dramatize his situation; instead it sums up the direction of his whole life in one plain sentence.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem... And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.2 Kings 22:1-2 (KJV)

A boy who had lost his father and grew up in a corrupt generation could easily have drifted with the current. But the grace of God came upon him, so that from his youth he walked the right path, turning neither to the right nor to the left.

Seeking God at Sixteen

Chronicles fills in the earlier stirrings of Josiah's spiritual life. He did not wait until he had power and standing to take his faith seriously; while still a youth he turned to God of his own accord. Seeking was the starting point of his whole life.

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father.2 Chronicles 34:3 (KJV)

A heart that seeks God often comes before any real knowledge of his word. Josiah had not yet read the law in full, yet he already longed for the living and true God, and it was precisely this hunger that God had prepared to satisfy.

The Forgotten Book of the Law Is Rediscovered

After becoming king, Josiah ordered the repair of the long-neglected temple. It was in the midst of clearing and restoring it that a treasure, forgotten for years, came back to light. The word of God had actually lain buried and covered in dust within God's own house.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD.2 Kings 22:8 (KJV)

How sobering this moment is: the temple still stood, the worship still went on, yet the Book of the Law had long been lost. The outer shell of religion can carry on for years while people grow utterly estranged from the word of God. Josiah's reform began with the rediscovery of this very book.

He Heard, and He Tore His Clothes

When Shaphan the scribe read the Book of the Law aloud to the king, Josiah's response was not indifference, nor anger, but a repentance that struck him to the depths of his soul.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.2 Kings 22:11 (KJV)

Tearing one's clothes was a sign of overwhelming grief and self-abasement. He realized how his forefathers had forsaken God and what judgment they had brought down, and he could no longer stay at ease. Truly encountering the word of God never merely adds knowledge; it exposes us to ourselves and shakes us to the core.

A Tender Heart, and God Will Take Notice

Josiah sent men to inquire of the prophetess Huldah. God's answer held both a declaration of judgment and a special mercy toward this king. What God valued was not his throne, but his reverent, humble, weeping heart.

Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.2 Kings 22:19 (KJV)

What God took notice of was a heart that was tender and trembling before his word. Such a heart does not depend on age or rank; it depends only on whether one is willing to bow before the word of God.

A Renewal That Swept the Whole Nation

Josiah did not stop at being moved. He gathered the people to the house of the LORD, read the words of the covenant aloud before them all, and led the way in making a covenant to obey with all his heart. Then he swept away the idols, tore down the high places, and cleansed the temple, and he restored the Passover that had long been abandoned. True repentance always bears true action, and he turned the sorrow of his heart into a cleansing and a return that reached across the whole land.

And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.2 Kings 23:25 (KJV)
