Ezra the Scribe: A Heart Set to Seek the Law of the LORD

In the years after Israel returned from exile, the foundation of the temple had been laid again, yet the people's hearts remained desolate. It was at just such a moment that God raised up a man, the scribe Ezra. He was no king, and he wielded no army. All he held in his hand was a single scroll of God's law. And yet it was through that book that a broken people were gathered again and a cold faith was set ablaze anew. Ezra's story tells us this: true revival always begins when God's word returns to the center.

He Was a Priest and a Skilled Scribe

Ezra came from a priestly line, a descendant of Aaron, and he was also a ready scribe. A 'scribe' was not merely a copyist who could write; he was someone who read deeply, explained, and passed on the words of God. In an age when Scripture was scarce and truth was handed down by word of mouth, such a person was like a lampstand shining in the dark.

Scripture points out that the gracious hand of God was upon him, and this was because the focus of his whole life set him apart from others.

This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.Ezra 7:6 (KJV)

He Set His Heart to Seek the Law of the LORD

The secret of Ezra's whole life is distilled into a single verse. He did not merely glance at the law now and then; he had fixed his heart, making the pursuit of God's word the direction of his very life.

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.Ezra 7:10 (KJV)

This verse contains three verbs: to seek, to do, and to teach. First enter the truth yourself, then live out the truth, and only then teach others. The order must not be reversed. Many long to serve the crowds, yet they skip these two steps, setting their hearts and doing the word. Ezra reminds us that power in the pulpit is born in the secret place, out of an encounter with God's word.

He Led the Remnant of the Exiles Home

Ezra led a group of exiles on the long journey from Babylon back to Jerusalem. The road was full of danger, with money, sacred vessels, women, and children all exposed to enemies and robbers.

Yet before setting out, Ezra had boasted to the king that 'the hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him,' and so he was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers to escort them. Instead he fasted and prayed, looking to God alone. By his actions he bore witness: what you say you believe, you ought to live out.

He Mourned and Prayed Over the People's Sin

After the return, Ezra discovered that the people had intermarried with foreign nations and had taken up their wicked habit of idol worship. He did not begin by pointing fingers at others; instead he tore his garments, pulled out his hair, and fell down before the house of God, confessing sin on behalf of the whole nation.

He prayed, 'O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee.' A leader who truly belongs to God carries the sin of the people as his own burden, weeping before God first rather than passing judgment from on high. This heart that intercedes for the community is the very soil of revival.

He Read the Word of God Aloud

By the eighth chapter of Nehemiah, the most moving scene appears. The wall was finished, and the people gathered in the open square before the Water Gate, and with one accord they said to Ezra: bring out the book of the law. This was not a religious ritual forced upon them, but the people's own heartfelt longing.

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up.Nehemiah 8:5 (KJV)

From early morning until midday, before all the men and women who could understand, he read the book of the law of God plainly and gave the sense, so that the people understood what was read. Reading God's word aloud is not merely reciting from the page; it is helping people truly hear and receive it.

The Word of God Brings Tears, and Also Joy

When the people heard the words of the law, they all wept, for they saw how far short they had fallen. But Ezra and the Levites comforted them, saying: do not mourn, and do not weep, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

God's word is like a mirror, first revealing our filth so that our hearts are pierced with repentance; yet it is also like a loving Father, placing grace and hope back within our hearts. Anyone who truly encounters God's word will experience this turning from sorrow to joy, and this is precisely the mark of revival.

Let God's Word Return to the Center of Your Life

Ezra held no scepter in his hand, only a scroll, and yet he changed a whole generation. Today we possess a Bible more complete and more precious than his. May you too, like Ezra, set your heart to seek, to obey, and to proclaim the word of God.
