Among the great heroes of faith, we often remember Abraham, yet we easily overlook the woman who walked the wilderness beside him, pitched her tent beside him, and hoped beside him—Sarah. Her whole life is almost bound to a single word: waiting. Waiting for a child, waiting for a promise to be fulfilled, waiting for the God who keeps His word. She was weak, she doubted, she laughed to herself—yet God's faithfulness never wavered because of it. Sarah's story is the story of everyone who is still waiting.
A Woman Who Came Out of Ur
Sarah was first named Sarai, the half-sister and the wife of Abraham (Genesis 20:12). She followed her husband out of Ur, out of Haran, and into a land God had promised but that she had not yet seen. She left the home she knew and tied her whole life to God's call on Abraham. That following was itself an act of faith.
Long Years of Barrenness
Scripture names the deepest ache of Sarah's life early on: 'But Sarai was barren; she had no child.' In an age when children were a blessing and childlessness a disgrace, those few words carried decades of tears and sighing. God had promised Abraham that his offspring would be as many as the stars of heaven, yet as the years passed one by one, Sarah's arms remained empty.

Trying to Fulfill the Promise Her Own Way
When the waiting stretched too long, she tried to take matters into her own hands. Sarah gave her servant Hagar to Abraham, hoping to gain a child that way. Ishmael was born as a result, but with him came jealousy, bitterness, and strife in the household. This episode reminds us that God's promise cannot be secured by human effort. Sarah's weakness is painfully real, yet it also makes the grace that followed shine all the more purely.
That Quiet Laugh Inside the Tent
When the LORD announced once more that Sarah would surely bear a son, she—now nearly ninety—laughed within herself at the tent door. In that laughter was doubt, and also the instinctive self-protection of someone who had known too much disappointment. Yet God did not rebuke her harshly; He simply asked one gentle question that struck at the very foundation of faith.

That question was not for Sarah alone; it is for every one of us who feels the promise is too late and the difficulty too great. What is too hard belongs to our side; with God, nothing is too hard.
Isaac—The Promise Born in Old Age
The LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and did unto her as He had promised. When Abraham was a hundred years old and Sarah ninety, the child she had waited for all her life was finally born. Sarah named him Isaac, which means 'he laughs'—once the quiet laugh of doubt, now the joyful laughter of gladness.

Mother of Nations, Strengthened by Faith
The New Testament places Sarah among the heroes of faith, saying that 'through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age', because she judged Him faithful who had promised (Hebrews 11:11). God had also told Abraham that Sarah would become a mother of nations, and that kings of peoples would come from her (Genesis 17:16). The woman whose womb had once been empty became, in the end, a fountain of blessing for all peoples.
Written for You, Who Are Still Waiting
Sarah lived a hundred and twenty-seven years (Genesis 23:1). Her life was not without stumbling, yet through the long wait she learned to trust. She tells us this: God's promise may come very slowly, but it never fails; our faith may be very small, but God's faithfulness never wavers. Perhaps you too are in the middle of a wait with no end in sight—may Sarah's story let you hear that question again: Is anything too hard for the LORD?
