In the sweeping story of the Exodus, Moses and Aaron often stand at center stage, but there is one sister who runs through nearly the whole narrative alongside them: Miriam. She was the older sister of Moses and Aaron, and the first woman in the Bible to be given the title of 「prophetess」. From the reeds along the Nile, to the celebration on the far shore of the Red Sea, to a single stumble in the wilderness, her story holds both glory and weakness, showing us real lessons in worship, leadership, and humility.
The Young Sister Watching by the River
When Pharaoh commanded that the Hebrew baby boys be killed, Moses' mother placed him in a basket of reeds and set it among the rushes by the river's edge. It was Miriam who stood watch from a distance, to see what would become of the child. When Pharaoh's daughter lifted the baby out, it was this quick-thinking sister who stepped forward and found the child's own mother to nurse him. God's great plan to rescue Israel began with the care and courage of one young girl.
And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.Exodus 2:4 (KJV)
Singing with a Timbrel After the Red Sea
Forty years later, when the people of Israel had crossed the Red Sea on dry ground and watched with their own eyes as Egypt's army was buried in the water, Miriam appears again. This time she is a prophetess, timbrel in hand, leading the women in dancing and drumming, giving the victory to the God who works wonders.
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.Exodus 15:20-21 (KJV)
Leadership Through Worship
Miriam's leadership did not rest on power but on leading the way in worship. She turned God's mighty acts into song and the beat of the timbrel, inviting all the women of the congregation to respond together to God's grace. Later the prophet Micah bore witness that God sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to go before His people and lead them. True spiritual leaders turn people's eyes toward God, not toward themselves.
The Crack of Pride
Yet along the road in the wilderness, Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married, saying in their hearts, Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us as well? On the surface this sounded like a plea for fairness, but underneath it lay pride, a discontent with the order God had established and a desire to lift themselves up. And the LORD heard it all.
And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.Numbers 12:2 (KJV)
Mercy Within Discipline
The LORD Himself defended Moses, calling him a man who was exceedingly meek. Because of her sin Miriam became leprous, white as snow, and was shut out of the camp for seven days. The discipline was real, and the cost was heavy. Yet even within that discipline God kept His mercy, for it was Moses who cried out on her behalf: Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee. The very brother she had slandered turned around and interceded for his sister.
Seven Days of Waiting Outside the Camp
Even more moving is that during the seven days Miriam was shut outside the camp, the people did not journey on, but waited until she was brought in again. God's people halted their steps because one person was under discipline, for their lives were bound together. After seven days she was received back and returned to the camp. God's discipline is never meant to destroy, but to win back and restore.
Worship, Leadership, and Humility
Miriam's life is like a mirror: she could watch by the river and she could sing by the sea; she was a prophetess who led worship, and she also fell into pride. She reminds us that however great the gift, it still needs humility; however long the service, we must be content with the place God has appointed. And no matter how weak we may be, the God who heard Miriam and who also listened to Moses' prayer is always a God full of mercy, ready and willing to heal.
