When Proverbs 6:16-19 lists the things God hates, "a proud look" comes first — ahead of a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood.
That ordering deserves a pause: why does an attitude rank above concrete acts of harm?
Because it is the doorway to the rest
Scripture's logic is that pride is not one sin among many but the shape of sin.
The temptation in Genesis 3 is "ye shall be as gods" — the core of the first sin is not eating but replacing. Isaiah 14:13-14 describes a fall using five "I will" statements.
Pride comes first because it is the thing that makes a person feel they do not need God.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
God resisteth the proud
James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 both quote the same line: "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
"Resisteth" is antitassomai — a military term meaning to draw up in battle array against. Not dislike. Actively taking the opposing position.
The weight is in the contrast: the same God lines up against one kind of person and gives grace to another.
Pride and confidence are not the same
This is where people most often blur things. Scripture never asks anyone to belittle themselves. Paul says plainly "I laboured more abundantly than they all" (1 Cor 15:10) — but in the same verse he first says "by the grace of God I am what I am".
The difference is attribution: confidence knows what you can do; pride believes you earned it.
1 Corinthians 4:7 puts the question most directly: "what hast thou that thou didst not receive?"
Three shapes pride takes in scripture
1. Looking down on people — the Pharisee's prayer: "God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are" (Luke 18:11).
2. Not taking advice — "only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom" (Prov 13:10).
3. Taking the credit — Nebuchadnezzar says "is not this great Babylon, that I have built", and the sentence is barely finished before it costs him (Dan 4:30).
A concrete test
Pride is hard to self-diagnose, because it obscures the very view you would need. More useful than asking "am I proud" is asking a few specific things:
Last time someone pointed out I was wrong, what was my first reaction?
When I tell the story of what I have done, how often do other people appear in it?
Is there anything I know I need help with and will not ask about?
The third question is usually the most accurate — refusing to ask for help is often not independence but pride.
The remedy scripture gives
It is not self-deprecation but accuracy. Romans 12:3: "not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith."
"Soberly" is the operative word — thinking too little of yourself is not humility either.
