Scripture's standard for friendship is not quite the one most people carry. What it values is not being easy company but being able to tell the truth.
The bluntest verse
Proverbs 27:6: "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful."
That sets the bar hard: someone who never makes you uncomfortable is not necessarily a friend. The line further down is more direct still — "iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend" (27:17). Sharpening requires friction.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)
Three tests in Proverbs
1. Still there in trouble — "a friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (17:17).
2. Honest rather than flattering — "open rebuke is better than secret love" (27:5).
3. Does not carry your business elsewhere — "a talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter" (11:13).
Two of the three concern the mouth. Scripture locates friendship largely in what gets said.
On choosing friends
Proverbs 13:20 is unambiguous: "he that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
Paul quotes a Greek proverb in 1 Corinthians 15:33: "evil communications corrupt good manners." Scripture does not pretend people are unaffected by those around them.
But hold it in balance: Jesus was insulted as "a friend of publicans and sinners". Choosing friends is about who shapes you at depth, not about whose table you will sit at.
David and Jonathan
The fullest account of a friendship in scripture. The point is that Jonathan was Saul's son — in terms of succession, David was the single greatest threat to him.
And 1 Samuel 18:4 records that Jonathan gave David his robe, his garments, his sword, his bow and his belt. Those were the markers of a prince. Later he tells David plainly: "thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee" (23:17).
The word Jesus changed
John 15:15 contains a turn that is easy to read past: "Henceforth I call you not servants… but I have called you friends."
The reason he gives: "for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."
The difference is not warmth but whether information is shared. A servant receives the task; a friend knows the reason.
One practical check
If you want to test yourself against these passages, the useful question is not how many friends you have. It is: is there anyone you would let tell you something you do not want to hear?
Search "friend" in the BiblePro app and read the Proverbs occurrences in one pass, then 1 Samuel 18 and John 15. And do look for a local church — that is where friendships like this get made.
