Gratitude is not difficult when things are going well. The real question is how someone in the middle of a hard stretch is supposed to manage it.
Scripture's answer to that is a good deal more concrete than "look on the bright side".
How the lament psalms are built
About a third of the psalms are laments — complaints, questions, cries for help. And they share a structure:
State the situation → complain to God → ask → then turn to thanks.
Psalm 13 is the shortest example. It opens "How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD?" and six verses later closes "I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me."
The crucial detail: nothing in between got fixed. David does not say the problem resolved. He turned inside it.
But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.Psalm 13:5 (KJV)
Jonah inside the fish
Jonah 2 is a strange prayer: Jonah is still inside the fish, not yet delivered, and he has already started thanking God.
2:9: "I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving." Said before the rescue.
That is not optimism. It is a choice about order: acknowledge that God will act, then wait and see.
Three practices that do not need the feeling first
1. Count specifics, not abstractions.
"Thank God for everything" is abstract and nothing happens when you say it. "Someone messaged me today." "The medication is working." "This meal was warm." The thanks in the psalms is almost entirely specific — naming the Red Sea, naming enemies, naming harvests.
2. Count backwards, not forwards.
The hardest part of a hard stretch is not being able to see ahead. But there is always something behind you — what happened to the thing you were afraid of this time last year? The writer of Psalm 77 does exactly this: "I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old" (77:11).
3. Say it out loud or write it down.
Thanksgiving in scripture is nearly always audible and public. Thinking "I ought to be grateful" and actually saying "thank you for getting me through today" do not have the same effect.
No pretending required
To be clear: scripture never asks anyone to pretend. Lamentations is an entire book of weeping. Psalm 88 ends "lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness" — no turn, it just stops there.
It was collected into scripture anyway, which tells you God does not mind being spoken to that way.
Gratitude is not there to cover the hard thing. It is a second thing set down beside it.
