The fruit of the Spirit comes from Galatians 5:22-23, and there are nine: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. They get printed on cards; the actual meanings are usually more specific than the words suggest.

Why fruit, not fruits

The Greek is singular. That is not a technicality. Paul is not offering nine varieties to pick from; he is describing nine facets of one piece of fruit — as an orange is sweet and juicy and fragrant at once. You do not grow patience while having no love at all.

The first three: toward God

Love (agape) — not a feeling but a decision to give. Joy — not dependent on circumstance, which is why Paul could write it from prison. Peace — not the absence of conflict but the end of the war inside.

The middle three: toward people

Patience — the Greek is literally "long-tempered", slow to go off. Kindness — actively good to people. Goodness — not merely refraining from harm but doing something.

The last three: toward yourself

Faithfulness — reliable; your word holds. Gentleness — the Greek described a warhorse broken to the bridle: strength under control. This is the most misread of the nine; it is not weakness. Self-control — able to tell yourself no.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

Fruit and gifts are not the same thing

This is the most useful distinction in the passage: gifts are abilities God gives you for serving others; fruit is character God grows inside you. Gifts can be spectacular while character is a wreck — which is precisely the Corinthian problem. It is why Paul follows his chapter on gifts immediately with his chapter on love.

Fruit grows; it is not manufactured

The word itself is the answer. No tree ever produced fruit by straining. It puts down roots, takes in water, stands in the light, and fruit follows. Jesus said he is the vine and we are the branches: remain in him, and you bear much.

Read Galatians 5 in the BiblePro app beside John 15 and its picture of the vine; then use the original-language tools on "gentleness" (prautes) and see how little it resembles weakness. And do look for a local church to read alongside others.
