The armour of God comes from Ephesians 6:10-18. Paul wrote it under Roman guard, quite possibly looking at the soldier in front of him.

The six pieces

The belt of truth — a Roman soldier's belt gathered the tunic and carried the weapons; everything else hung on it. The breastplate of righteousness — covering the heart and the vital organs. Shoes of the gospel of peace — military boots were studded, made for standing firm and marching far. The shield of faith — the large Roman shield could be soaked in water, specifically to kill flaming arrows. The helmet of salvation — protecting the mind. The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The detail most readers miss: only one is offensive

Five of the six are defensive. The only weapon of attack is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God — and the Greek is not a long sword but the machaira, the short Roman blade used at close quarters. That is exactly how Jesus fought in the wilderness: three times he answered with "it is written".

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)

Why "stand" rather than "charge"

The word "stand" occurs four times in this passage. Paul does not tell anyone to storm a city; he tells them to hold their ground. That shapes the whole idea of spiritual conflict: the victory is already won, and your task is not to be pushed off the position.

The seventh piece: prayer

Strictly, the list is followed by a line that often gets dropped: "praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit." Prayer is not a seventh piece of equipment; it is how all the others are put on. Armour on a rack protects nobody. Wearing it, and watching in prayer, is Paul's point.

How to actually use it

It need not become a daily ritual to recite. The real use is plainer: know the truth well enough to recognise a lie when one hits you. There is only one way to do that — familiarity with the word. A sword is only available if it is already in your hand.
