Spiritual gifts are abilities God gives believers for serving other people. There is no single master list in the Bible — the three main passages name different things, and that difference is itself instructive.
The three lists
Romans 12 — prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading, showing mercy.
1 Corinthians 12 — word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, interpretation.
Ephesians 4 — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.
Why no two agree
This is the detail worth noticing: none of the three is complete, and none is trying to be. Paul names examples fitted to whatever that church was facing. So the worry "my gift isn't on the list" is misplaced — the list was always open-ended.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:4 (KJV)
Three words in one breath
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 uses three terms that are easy to read past: gifts (where the ability comes from — the Spirit), administrations (where it is used — the Lord), and operations (who makes it work — God). Three angles on the same thing.
Gifts are for other people
This is the centre of the chapter and the part most often skipped: "the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." A gift is not a badge of maturity or an identity. Corinth was spectacularly gifted and was Paul's most troublesome church — because they had turned gifts into rank.
Which is why chapter 13 follows immediately
Having finished the list, Paul says "yet shew I unto you a more excellent way" and writes the passage read at weddings. That is not sentiment; it is correction: "though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass."
How to find out what yours is
You do not need a questionnaire. Three plain questions usually work better: when you do what, do people actually end up helped? Has anyone in your church been steadied by your serving? What can you do without feeling you are forcing it? Gifts are generally discovered in service rather than diagnosed before it.
Set Romans 12 beside 1 Corinthians 12 in the BiblePro app and compare the two lists; then read on into chapter 13 and see why Paul puts love above all of them. And do look for a local church — that is where gifts get identified.
