What Is the Book of James About? A Chapter Guide

James stands out in the New Testament: five chapters, 108 verses, and more than fifty imperative verbs. It barely argues; it tells you to go and do, one line after another.

Who wrote it

The opening says only "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ". It is generally taken to be James the brother of Jesus — not either of the two apostles by that name. He later led the church in Jerusalem (Acts 15).

Note how he introduces himself: he was Jesus' brother, and calls himself a servant.

What each chapter covers

Chapter 1 — trials, wisdom, rich and poor, hearing versus doing.
Chapter 2 — no favouritism; faith and works.
Chapter 3 — the tongue; wisdom from above.
Chapter 4 — where quarrels come from; do not judge; do not boast about tomorrow.
Chapter 5 — warning to the rich; patience; prayer and healing.

Why Luther disliked it

Luther called James "an epistle of straw" — he had just come through the discovery of justification by faith, and James writes that "by works a man is justified, and not by faith only" (2:24). The tension is real and worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over.

Does it contradict Paul?

No — because the two men are not using the word "works" for the same thing.

Paul opposes earning salvation by keeping the law; his opponents want to add circumcision.
James opposes a professed faith that leaves no trace in a life; his opponents say "I have faith" and send a hungry brother away (2:15-16).

Put simply: Paul is describing how a person is saved; James is describing what a saved person looks like. Both quote Abraham — from different episodes of the same life.

Chapter 3, on the tongue

This is the most concentrated passage on speech in the Bible. James compares the tongue to a ship's rudder, a spark, an unruly evil — a small thing setting the direction of the whole vessel. It is hard to read today without thinking about what you have typed online.

When to read it

James suits the point where you have believed for a while and have started to feel you know enough. It does not add to your knowledge; it inspects your life. All five chapters take about twenty minutes.
