1 John is the one New Testament letter that directly answers "how do I know my faith is real". Five chapters, very plain vocabulary, and every section doing the same job: supplying something you can check yourself against.

The situation

A group had left the church teaching that Jesus had not really come in the flesh — an early strand of what became gnostic thinking. John notes in 2:19 that "they went out from us".

Which is why the first sentence is so physical: "That which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled" (1:1). Heard, seen, handled. He is insisting this is not an idea.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.1 John 5:13 (KJV)

The three tests

The letter runs three threads and keeps returning to each:

1. The test of truth — what do you make of Jesus? "Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God" (4:2).

2. The test of obedience — how do you live? "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar" (2:4).

3. The test of love — how do you treat people? "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar" (4:20).

These are not alternatives; they hold together. John interleaves them deliberately so no one can pick a favourite and stop there.

The sharpest line

The logic of 4:20 is hard to escape: "he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" Failing at the visible one settles the invisible one.

How it pairs with John's Gospel

John 20:31 — these things are written "that ye might believe".
1 John 5:13 — these things are written "that ye may know that ye have eternal life".

One book exists to bring people to faith; the other to give the believing certainty. Read together, the purposes join up.

It also handles failure

Notably, John does not set the bar at sinlessness. 1:8-9 is explicit: "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves… If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins."

The tests measure direction, not perfection.

How to read it

Five chapters, about twenty minutes. Read it in one sitting — the argument spirals, and reading it in pieces makes it look repetitive.
