Seven times in John's Gospel, Jesus states who he is beginning with "I am". This is not incidental phrasing — "I AM" is the name God gave himself to Moses at the burning bush. His Jewish audience understood, which is why on several occasions they reached for stones.
The seven sayings
I am the bread of life (John 6:35) — said just after feeding five thousand. They wanted more bread; he told them what would actually fill them.
I am the light of the world (8:12) — spoken as the Feast of Tabernacles lamp ceremony ended.
I am the door of the sheep (10:7) — a shepherd slept across the entrance of the fold; his own body was the gate.
I am the good shepherd (10:11) — who lays down his life for the sheep.
I am the resurrection and the life (11:25) — said at Lazarus' tomb, moments before calling him out.
I am the way, the truth and the life (14:6) — at the last supper, answering Thomas' "how can we know the way?"
I am the true vine (15:1) — on the road to Gethsemane.
Why those two words carry so much
In Exodus 3 Moses asks God his name, and the answer is "I AM THAT I AM". In John 8:58 Jesus says "before Abraham was, I am" — the same words. The crowd picked up stones immediately, because they had understood him exactly.
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.John 8:58 (KJV)
Each one follows a specific scene
Worth noticing: not one of the seven is abstract. Bread of life after feeding a crowd. Light of the world after a festival of lamps. Resurrection and the life at a grave. He does something first, then explains that the thing points to him.
Why seven
John arranged this deliberately: his Gospel also contains seven miracles, which he calls signs. Seven is the number of completeness in scripture — seven sayings and seven signs together make a full statement of identity.
How to read them
Take one at a time, with the chapter it sits in. Detached from their scenes they are only fine sentences; put back, each answers one particular person in one particular trouble. Martha has just buried her brother. Thomas has just admitted he does not know the way. The disciples are walking toward the garden where he will be arrested.
